In contemporary societies, the growing need for flexibility and its impact on labour markets are highly debated. The deregulation of labour markets has led to a growing proportion of workers in ...various atypical employment relationships, such as temporary jobs. In this respect Spain stands out, from a European perspective, as a country that has experienced a fast and intense shift from one of the most rigid employment protection systems to a highly flexible labour market with an extraordinarily high proportion of temporary employees. The Spanish labour market is highly segmented with 'insiders' in permanent positions, and 'outsiders' (unemployed and inactive) and work-insecure employees in temporary posts, particularly among youth. This article attempts to gauge the impact of increasing flexibility on transitions to adulthood in Spain. Using the Spanish European Community Household Panel, the analysis concentrates on three interrelated transitions: labour market entry, first marriage and first parenthood. Previous contributions have well elaborated the repercussions of non-employment. What makes this study distinct is the particular focus on precarious employment relationships and individuals' perception of job security. The results give a first indication that the type of employment relationship and the perception of job security seem to matter in the studied transition processes.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to review research articles about the health of workers with precarious employment (precarious workers). Methods: Articles that compared the health status ...between permanent and precarious workers were systematically searched. The collected articles are discussed with respect to their study design, data source, sample size, country, health outcome, definition of precarious employment, and primary findings. Results: Sixty-eight articles were identified by the inclusion criteria. Health outcomes were categorized into four types: occupational injuries, physical health, mental health, and alternative health measurements. Precarious employment was associated with a high prevalence of occupational injuries, higher mortality rate, and inferior degree of mental health. For alternative health measures, access to health services were limited among precarious workers. Sickness absence or leave was taken less often by precarious workers than permanent workers. Conclusions: Unstable employment and the limited welfare of precarious workers might affect their health in relation to a variety of health-related characteristics while several studies concluded that permanent workers had an inferior health status. Therefore, the current social climate, which allows precarious employment with low benefits and diverse work contracts, might be detrimental for workers' health, in general.
While much of the international debate on the future of work focuses on the links between new forms of employment and social protection, and especially on transitions between jobs, this paper ...addresses a still under-researched issue: the interconnections between employment regulations and business strategies in the production of precarious employment. It seeks to make a contribution to a new strand of research which has emerged in France, Britain and the United States and has cast light on the link between new modes of business organization and new forms of employment. The paper particularly highlights labour recommodification processes as the key instrument in this link and illustrates the dynamics at play in three service sectors known for a high incidence of precarious employment - call centres, performing arts, and domiciliary care for the elderly, in five European countries.
In this orientation, the instability has been established as a form of socio-labor integration of large segments of the population from the 70's onwards in Western economies, and in the 80 in Argentina. In a scenario characterized by the revitalization of the actors union and union-based conflicts especially since 2004 in the country, we intent to assess in which ways, with what attributes, capabilities and limitations, there have been demands and conflicting actions around the job insecurity stimulated by delegates and based workers. With this encouragement, we are concerned to observe how class solidarity links are recreated within the working groups. Under this goal, we present an analysis of three cases of based working groups that have faced demands and actions around this problem: two in the food industry and one in the metallurgical sector. In the industry sector, and in these three cases in particular, the demands around job insecurity have been directed primarily to deal with contractual diversification that was installed in workplaces since the 90's to today. In essence, workers with temporary contracts and to a lesser extent the companies outsourced workers.

This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Guy Standing's immensely influential 2011 book introduced the ...Precariat as an emerging mass class, characterized by inequality and insecurity. Standing outlined the increasingly global nature of the Precariat as a social phenomenon, especially in the light of the social unrest characterized by the Occupy movements. He outlined the political risks they might pose, and at what might be done to diminish inequality and allow such workers to find a more stable labour identity. His concept and his conclusions have been widely taken up by thinkers from Noam Chomsky to Zygmunt Bauman, by political activists and by policy-makers. This new book takes the debate a stage further, looking in more detail at the kind of progressive politics that might form the vision of a Good Society in which such inequality, and the instability it produces, is reduced. A Precariat Charter discusses how rights - political, civil, social and economic - have been denied to the Precariat, and argues for the importance of redefining our social contract around notions of associational freedom, agency and the commons.
The economic crisis has left a mark in journalism with an increase in unemployment and a downturn in working conditions, especially during the period 2008-2012. No studies have been found with ...current data that help to understand the real situation of the sector, and that is why this investigation provides an in-depth analysis about the journalist labor market in Spain composed by an analysis development of unemployment figures, job seekers and journalists recruitment from April 2018 to May 2019, categorized by age and gender. Through an observation-based and multi-disciplinary study with a statistical reinterpretation of Public State Employment Service database, the most frequent hiring activities and the provinces with the highest demand are reported. Also, recovery signs, employment increases and decreases are identified, although there are indicators of precarious contractual links and a much higher impact of unemployment with women than with men. The annual trends are lower in young people and women, practically stable during a long duration and slightly rising among foreigners, over 45 years old and disabled.
