The importance of genetic diversity, especially within small populations of endangered species, is becoming increasingly apparent. Genetic engineering techniques that could potentially enhance ...diversity are now being developed. However, the use of such techniques would require social licence and yet within the general population there is limited understanding of the importance of variation within a species. This qualitative study explored the potential of introducing the concept of within-species variation to New Zealand primary school children (5 to 11 year olds) with the aim of preparing these students to make critical decisions about the use of these techniques in their futures. Eighty-four children participated in the study and their explanations for the impact that differences between individuals may have were analysed revealing their scientifically acceptable understanding of the concept. But findings also highlighted potential misconceptions that they may retain. These misconceptions include a belief that animals think and behave in a manner similar to humans or that variations within a species are for identification purposes only. Findings showed that the concept of within-species variation could be introduced to primary school children. However, to do this successfully curriculum documents may need to be reviewed and teachers may require specific professional development.
Using the example of the multi-perspectival subject of science education, the book shows the basics, conditions for success and didactic concepts of digitization in elementary school. It describes ...the various aspects of digitization in elementary schools and provides a sound basis for political, pedagogical and didactic discourse. The book focuses not only on fundamental theoretical considerations of digital education in science education, but also on selected aspects of individual support with and through digital media, as well as on concrete suggestions for action and implementation options for digitization in science education. In this sense, the book offers suggestions for theory, research and practice.

Reciprocity between student success and community support has emerged as a strong theme in a phenomenological case study that was conducted amongst post‐primary educational migrant students1 in Laos. ...Students clearly articulated their dependence upon community support and the ways in which they gave back to their communities in exchange for their continuing education. The descriptions of their experiences were indicative of hierarchical interdependence and highlighted the effects of urbanisation on educational migrants and their lifelong learning. This study draws on Bourdieu's capital theory to understand community and reciprocity as indicators of cultural and social capital. Findings revealed that building relationships between students and their communities is essential to advancing post‐primary education in Laos.
For a long time, historical educational research has seen a decline in its representation in university teaching and academic posts. Concurrently, its thematic and methodological variation has ...expanded impressively in the last two decades. This volume, dedicated to Edith Glaser, aims to enrich the legitimacy discourse on the importance and necessity of educational historical expertise from two perspectives. On the one hand, it presents exemplary fields of research in the history of education, on the other hand, contributions show the relevance of historical educational research for other (sub-)disciplines.
Introduction The introduction of inclusive education in primary schools has raised many questions about the impact of teachers’ role model behavior on the social participation of students with ...learning difficulties. Based on the “theory of social referencing,” this study examines whether students’ attitudes toward peers with learning difficulties are predicted by perceptions of their teachers’ role model behavior and the quality of the student–teacher relationship in the classroom. Methods A questionnaire was completed by N = 753 primary school students regarding their perceptions of the student–teacher relationship, their attitudes toward peers with learning difficulties, and their perceptions of teacher behavior toward students with learning difficulties. Results The results of a structural equation model indicate that students’ attitudes toward peers with learning difficulties can be explained significantly by their perceptions of teacher behavior and their perceptions of the quality of the student–teacher relationship in the classroom. The effect of students’ perceptions of teacher behavior on their attitudes toward peers with learning difficulties is mediated by their perceptions of the student– teacher relationship. Thus, students focus more on teacher behavior when they perceive a positive student–teacher relationship. Discussion Our findings emphasize the importance of teachers’ role model behavior in inclusive classrooms and offer opportunities to enhance the social participation of students with learning difficulties in inclusive primary school education.
Within the educational system, heritage‐related curriculum design and contents constitute a key factor in the sustainable preservation of heritage since only what is known and valued can be protected ...and preserved. Whether heritage education involves the inclusion of new materials in the curriculum, or the use of innovative approaches in handling heritage‐related contents that are already present in the several curricular areas in order to facilitate their teaching and promote heritage awareness, the fact remains that the curriculum itself becomes an important player. Our research aims at analysing the way heritage is approached in the 17 Decrees regulating the Primary Education curriculum in the Spanish territory. The results show that the methodological criterion used in the teaching‐learning of heritage is the sensitisation sequence: Knowing, Understanding, Respecting, Valuing, Sensitising, Taking Care, Transmitting, Heritagising and Identising. On the other hand, there are major differences across Spain’s regions regarding heritage awareness and curricular coverage: an issue that should be borne in mind in curriculum revision processes and in the design of academic programmes targeted at future teachers in order to secure the quality of heritage education.
Abstract
The paper aimed to clarify the developing instructional framework for creative problem solving (CPS) in climate change geography learning activity for primary school education via social ...media. The social media will be provided to engage students’ creative problem solving to identify and anticipate climate change geographical differentiation in potential impacts and vulnerability. The CPS climate change geography via social media was provided regarding on the five steps framework. This included 1) fact finding, 2) problem finding, 3) idea finding, 4) solution finding, and 5) acceptance finding. These CPS tasks for primary school students would enhance students to develop idea finding explicitly embedded and scaffolded fact finding, problem finding, idea finding, solution finding, and acceptance finding. The paper will discussed learning activities regarding on the 5 steps of CPS framework, strength point of the CPS climate change geography learning, and teachers’ role to facilitate students for the CPS.
