There are a number of overlapping themes and ideas that straddle these sections, but broadly speaking, the first part deals with the socio-political and didactic function of English history writing, ...the second with outlying texts belonging to the English Prose Brut tradition, and the third with late medieval books containing chronicles (and Prose Bruts) and their later owners and readers. Eckhardts account of Castleford's Chronicle treats the text as a witness to the development of the Brut tradition in a northern English context, tracing its surviving manuscript from its Yorkshire origins as an imperfect collaboration between two main scribes and a rubricator through to its eighteenth-century arrival in continental Europe among the household goods of a Londoner working in Germany, who may well have shared some similar bureaucratic interests and civic responsibilities as much earlier metropolitan readers of the text.
Examining nine Asian Canadian and Asian American narratives, Eleanor Ty explores how authors empower themselves, represent differences, and re-script their identities as 'visible minorities' within ...the ideological, imaginative, and discursive space given to them by dominant culture. In various ways, Asian North Americans negotiate daily with 'birthmarks,' their shared physical features marking them legally, socially, and culturally as visible outsiders, and paradoxically, as invisible to mainstream history and culture.
Ty argues that writers such as Denise Chong, Shirley Geok-lin Lim, and Wayson Choy recast the marks of their bodies and challenge common perceptions of difference based on the sights, smells, dress, and other characteristics of their hyphenated lives. Others, like filmmaker Mina Shum and writers Bienvenido Santos and Hiromi Goto, challenge the means by which Asian North American subjects are represented and constructed in the media and in everyday language. Through close readings grounded in the socio-historical context of each work, Ty studies the techniques of various authors and filmmakers in their meeting of the gaze of dominant culture and their response to the assumptions and meanings commonly associated with Orientalized, visible bodies.

writings of Ihara Saikaku at center stage, largely neglecting the
breadth of popular prose. In the first comprehensive study of the
birth of Japanese commercial publishing, Laura Moretti investigates
the vibrant world of vernacular popular literature. She marshals
new data on the magnitude of the seventeenth-century publishing
business and highlights the diversity and porosity of its
publishing genres. Moretti explores how booksellers sparked
interest among readers across the spectrum of literacies and
demonstrates how they tantalized consumers with vital ethical,
religious, societal, and interpersonal knowledge. She recasts books
as tools for knowledge making, arguing that popular prose engaged
its audience cognitively as well as aesthetically and emotionally
to satisfy a burgeoning curiosity about the world. Crucially,

didactic, finding pleasure in the profit gained from acquiring
knowledge by interacting with transformative literature. Drawing on
a rich variety of archival materials to present a vivid portrait of
seventeenth-century Japanese publishing, Pleasure in
Profit also speaks to broader conversations about the category
of the literary by offering a new view of popular prose that
celebrates plurality.
