Proactive policing, the strategic targeting of people or places to prevent crimes, is a well-studied tactic that is ubiquitous in modern law enforcement. A 2017 National Academies of Sciences report ...reviewed existing literature, entrenched in deterrence theory, and found evidence that proactive policing strategies can reduce crime. The existing literature, however, does not explore what the short and long-term effects of police contact are for young people who are subjected to high rates of contact with law enforcement as a result of proactive policing. Using four waves of longitudinal survey data from a sample of predominantly black and Latino boys in ninth and tenth grades, we find that adolescent boys who are stopped by police report more frequent engagement in delinquent behavior 6, 12, and 18 months later, independent of prior delinquency, a finding that is consistent with labeling and life course theories. We also find that psychological distress partially mediates this relationship, consistent with the often stated, but rarely measured, mechanism for adolescent criminality hypothesized by general strain theory. These findings advance the scientific understanding of crime and adolescent development while also raising policy questions about the efficacy of routine police stops of black and Latino youth. Police stops predict decrements in adolescents’ psychological well-being and may unintentionally increase their engagement in criminal behavior.
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has been devastating in all senses, particularly psychologically. Physical activity (PA) is known to aid psychological well-being, and it is worth ...investigating whether PA has been a coping strategy during this pandemic. The objective of this literature review is to analyze the extent to which engaging in PA during the COVID-19 pandemic impacts psychological health in the adult population. The literature was searched in all databases from the EBSCOhost Research Database-MEDLINE, APA PsycArticles, between others-published between 1 January 2019 and 15 July 2020. From 180 articles found, 15 were eligible. The reviewed articles showed an association between mental health distress-e.g., stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms, social isolation, psychological distress-and PA. This research concludes that the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown measures caused psychological distress. Those studies that analyzed PA showed that, during quarantine, adults increased their sedentary time and reduced their PA levels, showing controversial psychological outcomes. This review discusses whether PA is an effective strategy to face the COVID-19 pandemic psychological effects contributing to a further putative increase in the prevalence of psychiatric disorders.
While the sizable body of research focuses on various psychological effects of enterprise social media (ESM), research connecting the link between ESM and cyber-slacking is still very sparse. Drawing ...from theories of affordance and social bonding, we propose that the negative relationship between four genres of ESM (i.e., visibility, association, editability, and persistence) and cyber-slacking is mediated by social bounding at the workplace. Using a sample of 277 respondents, we found four genres of ESM technology (except for persistence affordance) relates to social bonding at the workplace, which in turn reduces the level of cyber-slacking behavior. Our findings suggest that ESM, being a potential tool for employee engagement, may offset employees' tendency to involve in cyber-slacking.
Social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected lifestyles: from sedentary behaviors to reduced physical activity, from disrupted sleep patterns to altered dietary habits. ...As a consequence, serious mental and emotional responses have been registered. There was a significant decline in physical and other meaningful activities of daily living, leisure, social activity, and education. In children, collateral effects of the pandemic include inadequate nutrition with a risk of both overweight and underweight, addiction to screens, lack of schooling, and psychosocial difficulties. Older adults are frequently unable to adapt to lockdown measures and suffer from depression and cognitive complaints. Recent studies focusing on changes in lifestyle during the Covid-19 pandemic and consequences on mental health have been identified in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Embase, and ScienceDirect. All the available literature has been retrospectively reviewed. The results of the present narrative review suggest that mental distress caused by social isolation seems to be linked not only to personality characteristics but also to several lifestyle components (sleep disruption, altered eating habits, reduced physical activity). This review aims to explore major changes in the lifestyle and quality of life and the impact of these changes on mental health, and to inform clinicians and policymakers about elements that may reduce the negative psychological effects of the quarantine period imposed during this worldwide crisis. There is an urgent need for tailored preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic mental health interventions for the general population and for higher risk groups.
Past research suggests that use of psychedelic substances such as LSD or psilocybin may have positive effects on mood and feelings of social connectedness. These psychological effects are thought to ...be highly sensitive to context, but robust and direct evidence for them in a naturalistic setting is scarce. In a series of field studies involving over 1,200 participants across six multiday mass gatherings in the United States and the United Kingdom, we investigated the effects of psychedelic substance use on transformative experience, social connectedness, and positive mood. This approach allowed us to test preregistered hypotheses with high ecological validity and statistical precision. Controlling for a host of demographic variables and the use of other psychoactive substances, we found that psychedelic substance use was significantly associated with positive mood—an effect sequentially mediated by self-reported transformative experience and increased social connectedness. These effects were particularly pronounced for those who had taken psychedelic substances within the last 24 h (compared to the last week). Overall, this research provides robust evidence for positive affective and social consequences of psychedelic substance use in naturalistic settings.
The 2013-2016 Ebola outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone was the worst in history with over 28,000 cases and 11,000 deaths. Here we examine the psychosocial consequences of the epidemic. ...Ebola is a traumatic illness both in terms of symptom severity and mortality rates. Those affected are likely to experience psychological effects due to the traumatic course of the infection, fear of death and experience of witnessing others dying. Survivors can also experience psychosocial consequences due to feelings of shame or guilt (e.g. from transmitting infection to others) and stigmatization or blame from their communities. At the community level, a cyclical pattern of fear occurs, with a loss of trust in health services and stigma, resulting in disruptions of community interactions and community break down. Health systems in affected countries were severely disrupted and overstretched by the outbreak and their capacities were significantly reduced as almost 900 health-care workers were infected with Ebola and more than 500 died. The outbreak resulted in an increased need for health services, reduced quality of life and economic productivity and social system break down. It is essential that the global response to the outbreak considers both acute and long-term psychosocial needs of individuals and communities. Response efforts should involve communities to address psychosocial need, to rebuild health systems and trust and to limit stigma. The severity of this epidemic and its long-lasting repercussions should spur investment in and development of health systems.
Despite their premise of objectivity, neuroscience tools for physiological data collection, such as electroencephalography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy, introduce racial bias into ...studies by excluding individuals on the basis of phenotypic differences in hair type and skin pigmentation. Furthermore, at least one methodology-electrodermal activity recording (skin conductance responses)-may be influenced not only by potential phenotypic differences but also by negative psychological effects stemming from the lived experience of racism. Here we situate these issues within structural injustice, urge researchers to challenge racism in their scientific work and propose procedures and changes that may lead to more equitable science.

To describe the trajectory and predictors of distress in parents of VPT infants during the first 12 weeks after birth, and to compare rates of depression and anxiety in parents of VPT infants with those in parents of healthy full-term (FT) infants shortly after birth and at 6 months' postnatal age.
Longitudinal, prospective, follow-up cohort study of depression and anxiety symptoms in parents of VPT infants (<30 weeks' gestational age; admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, between January 21, 2011, and December 23, 2013), documented every 2 weeks until age 12 weeks and at age 6 months, as well as in parents of healthy FT infants (≥37 weeks' gestational age; birth weight >2499 g; born at the Royal Women's Hospital between August 15, 2012, and March 26, 2014; not admitted to the neonatal nursery) shortly after birth and at age 6 months.

The study included 113 mothers (mean SD age at birth, 32.7 5.3 years) and 101 fathers (mean SD age at birth, 34.7 6.4 years) of 149 VPT infants (49% male; 84 singletons, 65 multiples; mean SD birth weight, 1021 261 g) as well as 117 mothers (mean SD age at birth, 32.9 4.8 years) and 110 fathers (mean SD age at birth, 35.9 5.3 years) of 151 healthy FT infants (50% male; 149 singletons, 2 multiples; mean SD birth weight, 3503 438 g). Mean scores and rates of depression and anxiety reduced over time for parents of VPT infants in the 12 weeks after birth: the mean (95% CI) change in depression score per week was -0.52 (-0.73 to -0.31; P < .001) for mothers and -0.39 (-0.56 to -0.21; P < .001) for fathers; the mean (95% CI) change in anxiety score per week was -0.16 (-0.26 to -0.05; P = .003) for mothers and -0.22 (-0.31 to -0.15; P < .001) for fathers. However, rates never dropped below 20%. Few perinatal or social risk factors predicted longitudinal changes in depression or anxiety. Compared with parents of FT infants, parents of VPT infants had higher rates of depression shortly after birth (mothers: 6% vs 40%; odds ratio OR = 9.9; 95% CI, 4.3 to 23.3; P < .001; fathers: 5% vs 36%; OR = 11.0; 95% CI, 4.1 to 29.6; P < .001) and at 6 months (mothers: 5% vs 14%; OR = 2.9; 95% CI, 1.0 to 8.2; P = .04; fathers: 6% vs 19%; OR = 3.4; 95% CI, 1.3 to 9.0; P = .01) as well as anxiety shortly after birth (mothers: 13% vs 48%; OR = 6.5; 95% CI, 3.3 to 12.6; P < .001; fathers: 10% vs 47%; OR = 7.8; 95% CI, 3.7 to 16.8; P < .001) and at 6 months (mothers: 14% vs 25%; OR = 2.1; 95% CI, 1.0 to 4.3; P = .05; fathers: 10% vs 20%; OR = 2.3; 95% CI, 1.0 to 5.3; P = .05).
Mothers and fathers of VPT infants had elevated rates of depression and anxiety symptoms that declined over time, although remaining above expected levels throughout the newborn period and at 6 months.
Current literature supports the comprehensive health benefits of exposure to nature and green environments on human systems. The aim of this state-of-the-art review is to elucidate empirical research ...conducted on the physiological and psychological effects of Shinrin-Yoku (or Forest Bathing) in transcontinental Japan and China. Furthermore, we aim to encourage healthcare professionals to conduct longitudinal research in Western cultures regarding the clinically therapeutic effects of Shinrin-Yoku and, for healthcare providers/students to consider practicing Shinrin-Yoku to decrease undue stress and potential burnout.
A thorough review was conducted to identify research published with an initial open date range and then narrowing the collection to include papers published from 2007 to 2017. Electronic databases (PubMed, PubMed Central, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Scopus) and snowball references were used to cull papers that evaluated the use of Shinrin-Yoku for various populations in diverse settings.
From the 127 papers initially culled using the Boolean phrases: "Shinrin-yoku" AND/OR "forest bathing" AND/OR "nature therapy", 64 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this summary review and then divided into "physiological," "psychological," "sensory metrics" and "frameworks" sub-groups.
Human health benefits associated with the immersion in nature continue to be currently researched. Longitudinal research, conducted worldwide, is needed to produce new evidence of the relationships associated with Shinrin-Yoku and clinical therapeutic effects. Nature therapy as a health-promotion method and potential universal health model is implicated for the reduction of reported modern-day "stress-state" and "technostress.".
