A first prize winner for sculpture in 1919, parisian-born Raymond Delamarre belongs to the neo-classical plastic order of the prize winners of the 20’s : painters Dupas, Roganeau, Billotey, Pougheon and Despujols, sculptors Foucault, Janniot, Martial et Vézien, engraver Decaris, architects Carlu, Roux-Spitz et Azéma. Attracted by colossal works, Delamarre gets free from the academic teachings of Beaux-Arts and reconciles his art as a medal-maker /decorator with a monumental one. Commissioned by architects, often Rome winners too, he is first and foremost a learned, elegant sculptor, with a liking for allegories, creating intricate works, half way between a decorative tradition, a high degree of realism and modern art. Volume plasticity and simplification of lines are derived from archaic Greek art and his technical and stylistic models from Roman toreutics. Influenced by Italian mannerists, he refers to French art in its various forms. The sinuous lines are borrowed from Ingres, Burne-Jones and Art nouveau, from Bourdelle’s synthetic art and Art Deco style. His agile mind’s eye is ensured by Rodin’s theory of profiles. The arrangement of his figures at various levels in his monumental reliefs are inspired by Janniot. His search for reliable references lend a historical, didactic and symbolical value to his work which, after the war, sometimes become too systematic. He is at his best when expressing very readable forms in original, poetic lines, akin to the daring attempts of cubists. However, he reasserts the continuity of a national identity of art, and shows that it can thus give birth to powerful, rythmic and greatly inventive plastic creations.
The artwork that made Walcutt nationally known in his own day was his marble monument to War of 1812 hero Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, in Cleveland, Ohio. It demonstrates how Walcutt’s lively, ...narrative, neoclassical style, first visible in his proposal for a monument in New York to George Washington, drew on rhetoric about Anglo-American greatness by historian George Bancroft, among others. Such rhetoric linking English and American political traditions often served as the ground for excluding people either foreign to, or inferior to, Protestant Anglo-Saxons. Walcutt’s public statue was accordingly able to win over Ohio’s fusion of Young America Democrats, antislavery Know-Nothings, and Republicans on the eve of the Civil War. Walcutt was aided in fending off criticism by humorist Artemus Ward, writing at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and an elite Cleveland Sketch Club.
L’agglomération de Glanum (Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, 13) occupée dès l’Age du Bronze jusqu’au IIIème s. ap. J.-C., selon la chronologie actuellement admise, constitue une référence ornementale et ...architecturale en Provence, pour sa période dite « préromaine ». Pourtant, des incohérences entre chronologie (IIIème-IIème s. av. J.-C.) et son ornementation architecturale (de référence italique) subsistent. Le centre monumental de l’agglomération « préromaine » est attribué aux populations grecques de Marseille par Henri Rolland, principal fouilleur du site archéologique, alors qu’Anne Roth-Congès propose de rendre l’agglomération aux populations indigènes locales. Nous avons choisi l’étude de la zone centrale du site actuellement dégagé, pour discerner les influences ornementales de l’architecture publique et définir qui habitait la ville, qui était à l’origine de sa monumentalisation et quel était alors son statut administratif. A l’époque impériale, le forum est construit sur un remblai permettant l’aménagement d’une large plate-forme qui autorise la conservation des édifices monumentaux et leur mobilier architectural associé. Nous avons eu l’opportunité de mener une fouille archéologique de faible ampleur dans cette zone. Les études de la stratigraphie et du mobilier céramique autorisent désormais une nouvelle chronologie dénouant les incohérences d’antan. L’étude du mobilier architectural montre une large influence italique mais avec des caractéristiques propres, inspirées des décors orientaux. L’examen des vestiges conservés met en évidence le même phénomène avec une adaptation des plans classiques à la topographie de l’agglomération. Enfin, le statut de l’agglomération reste difficile à décrypter, mais il s’inscrit dans le cadre de l’administration romaine qui se met en place dans le courant du Ier s. av. J.-C.
The urban area of Glanum (Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, 13) inhabited from the Bronze Age to the 3rd century A.D., according to the currently assumed chronology, constitutes a standard reference for ornamentation and architecture in Provence for the period known as “ pre-Romanesque”.Yet, some inconsistencies remain between its chronology (3rd- 2nd century B.C.) and its architectural ornamentation (with Italic reference). The monumental centre of the “pre-Romanesque” town has been ascribed to Greek populations in Marseilles by Henri Rolland, the principal digger of the archaeological site, whereas Anne Roth-Congès has proposed to give the town back to local native populations.We have chosen to study the central area of the currently cleared site in order to make out the ornamental influences of public architecture and to define who had lived in the town, who was at the origin of the creation of its monuments and which administrative status it had at the period.At the imperial time, the forum was built on an embankment permitting the development of a broad platform which allowed the preservation of monumental buildings and their associated architectural furniture. We had had the opportunity to carry out a small-scale excavation on this area. A close study of the stratigraphy and the ceramic furniture allowed from now on a new chronology which untangles the inconsistencies of former days.The examination of the architectural furniture shows a large Italic influence but with characteristics of its own, inspired by oriental décor. The study of preserved remains reveals the same phenomenon with an adaptation of classical plans to the topography of the town.Finally, the status of the town remains difficult to decipher but it must have been part of the Roman administration framework which was setting up in the course of the 1st century B.C.

La Monarchie de Juillet a entrepris la restauration et l'entretien de ses ...monuments construits sous l'Antiquité, le Moyen Age et le premier Empire. Parallèlement à l'action des Parlementaires, le Roi des Français, sur les fonds de sa dotation pécuniaire qui lui était versée chaque année par le Trésor Public, a entrepris un vaste plan de restauration des palais placés dans le domaine de la Couronne : Les Tuileries, Saint Cloud, Fontainebleau, Compiègne, Meudon... Il transforma aussi le palais de Versailles en "Musée consacré à toutes les Gloires de la France". Rien que ce chantier lui coûta personnellement la somme de 24 Millions de Francs.La Monarchie de Juillet, qui était un régime né de la révolution de Juillet 1830, devait se construire une légitimité à partir de rien. Ne pouvant se réclamer ni de la Tradition, ni de la gloire des armes, ni même de la Souveraineté du peuple ou du Principe monarchique, la jeune Monarchie de Juillet entama une vaste politique de restauration et d'achèvement de monuments qui dataient notamment de l'Empire et de la Monarchie absolue. Il s'agissait, pour Louis Philippe, de s'approprier l'intégralité de l'héritage politique français, afin de montrer le caractère universel de son régime. C'est ainsi que la Monarchie de Juillet construisit sa légitimité à gouverner la France.Cette thèse analyse les budgets investis dans les monuments français par les Gouvernements et les parlementaires, entre Juillet 1830 et Février 1848 (date de la chute de ce régime), ainsi que la politique conduite dans ce domaine des monuments, personnellement par Louis-Philippe à la même époque. L'auteur à dépouillé intégralement une partie du fonds O/4 des Archives Nationales de France, travail qui n'avait pas été réalisé jusqu'alors avec autant de précisions."
"During the 17 years of the reign of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans, France restored fully its historic monuments. The “Monarchie de Juillet” began the restoration and maintenance of monuments built in ancient times, the Middle Ages and the first Empire. In parallel with the action of Parliament, the King of the French undertook a comprehensive plan of restoration of those palaces belonging to the Crown: the Tuileries, St. Cloud, Fontainebleau, Compiègne, Meudon, drawing from his own endowment fund annually allocated by the public revenue. He also converted the Palace of Versailles into a "museum dedicated to all the glories of France." This site alone cost him 24 millions Francs. The “Monarchie de juillet” which was a regime born of the revolution of July 1830, had to build legitimacy from scratch. Unable to claim to be the fruits of tradition, or military glory, or even the sovereignty of the people or the monarchial principle, the young “Monarchie de Juillet” entered into an extensive policy of restoration and completion in particular of such monuments dating from the Empire and the absolute monarchy. Louis Philippe aimed to take over the entire French political legacy, in order to show the universal nature of his regime. In this way the “Monarchie de Juillet” built its legitimacy to govern France.This thesis analyzes the budgets invested in French monuments by governments and parliamentarians, between July 1830 and February 1848 (the date of the fall of the regime), as well as the personal political commitment of Louis Philippe in the field of monuments, during the same period.The author has fully analysed a part of the fund O / 4 of French National Archives a work that has never been done previously with so much precision.
Odabirom klasicističkih nadgrobnih spomenika prvih desetljeća 19. stoljeća i neoklasicističkih u romantičarskoj varijanti s kraja istog stoljeća viđeniji pravoslavni Srbi, tada već tako javno ...deklarirani, iskoristili su jedan estetski obrazac u vlastitoj samopromociji. Pritom su se poslužili svim njegovim ideološkim podtekstom kombiniranim s tradicionalnim uzusima kakav je učestala ćirilička epigrafika s tekstovima izrazito nacionalnog naboja. Takav amalgam omogućio je, između ostalog, da privatni spomenici uglednicima, makar smješteni u zatvorenom prostoru grobalja, na poseban način postanu javni.
This essay is a response to Ban’s contribution in Global Perspectives on the United States. Ellis asks how often it is that large, highly visible, and public monumental art is also strangely ...invisible as well, and notes that “Little Warsaw” (András Gálik and Bálint Havas) appearing in the Ban article makes such complexity especially central. Very appreciative of what Zsofia Ban writes in her essay, Ellis notes that the further one delves into a complex representation of “legend, social space, and locality” the more elusive the meanings become. In Ban’s case, it is especially interesting to see how a sculpture is talked about as mainstream in Hungarian representational art, by people both on the right and on the left, when it was not and had not been. “Little Warsaw” then offers American Studies a reminder of how capacious it must be in what falls within its turf, while never forgetting the complexities of imperialistic appropriation.
U članku se razmatraju javni spomenici kipara Rudolfa Valdeca (Krapina, 8. ožujka 1872. - Zagreb, 1. veljače 1929.) i Roberta Frangeša - Mihanovića, prvog hrvatskog modernog kipara. Riječ je o ...radovima Valdeca nastalim kratko nakon povratka sa školovanja u Beču i Münchenu, od 1899. godine kada izrađuje svoj prvi javni spomenik pjesnika Antuna Nemčića u Križevcima, preko spomenika pjesnika dr. Dragutina Milivoja pl. Domjanića iz 1905., hermama Ivana Kukuljevića - Sa-kcinskog i Ivana Mažuranića iz 1910., odnosno 1911. godine, javnih spomenika u formi portretnih medaljona kompozitora Ferde Livadića i gradonačelnika Ljudevita Šmidhena iz 1902., odnosno 1913. godine u Samoboru do spomenika Dositeja Obradovića u Beogradu iz 1911. i bugarskog vojvode generala Radka Hadži Dimitrieva za Sliven iz 1912. godine.
Poznavanje nekih spomenika, poput onoga dosad nepoznatog bugarskog vo-jvode generala Dimitrieva, plod je istraživanja u arhivima i staroj periodici koja ga spominje, dok su neki već i antologijski, no nikada analizirani, poput onoga Dositeja Obradovića, prvoga i rijetkog slobodnostojećega kipareva spomenika srpskog prosvjetitelja iz 18. stoljeća. U tim je reljefima (Ferdo Livadić i Ljudevit Šmidhen) i punim plastikama kipar dokazao vještinu modeliranja, činjenicu da je tehnički i zanatski bio potkovan. Također, dokazao je i temeljitost školovanja na bečkoj K. K. Kunstgewerbeschule des Österreichischen Museums für Kunst und Industrie (u klasi profesora Augusta Kühnea) i na Königliche Bayerische Akademie der bilde-nden Künste u Münchenu (klasa profesora Syriusa Eberlea). U njima su, osim ikonografske zanimljivosti, riješeni temeljni plastički problemi, učvršćena je kiparska morfologija i sintaksa i konačno, izvršena je transformacija od klesarstva, koje je do Valdecove pojave bilo tradicionalno obrtnički razvijeno u Zagrebu do profesionalnog kreativnog kiparstva jer je Valdec prvi u inozemstvu školovani akademski kipar u Zagrebu. K tome, uveo je secesiju u kiparstvo zagrebačke sredine koju je baštinio u Beču i u Münchenu gdje se školovao u razdoblju od 1897. do početka Prvog svjetskog rata 1914. Godine, kada i kipar modelira secesijski, ne bi li se kasnije vratio realizmu i naturalizmu. Razmatrani radovi u tekstu upravo i jesu secesijski s realističkim portretima. Valdec je iznašao oblikovna sredstva koja korespondiraju s europskim stilskim značajkama i na djelotvoran način umio posredovati između svojih stvaralačkih svjetonazora i javnosti jer je njegov leksik jednostavan, jezgrovit, svakome jasan i, shodno tome, funkcionalan. Javni su spomenici nastajali uz mnogobrojne majstorove portrete, nadgrobne spomenike i arhitektonske dekorativne alegorije koje je za relativno kratkog životnog i umjetničkog vijeka (umro je od embolije pluća u 57. godini života) intenzivno radio. Neki su poznati samo po arhivskim fotografijama, poput onoga bugarskog generala Dimitreieva, neki su realizirani a svi su odreda modelirani u glini i lijevani u gips, potom u broncu ili klesani u kamenu (Kukuljević - Sakcinski i Mažuranić), dok su postamenti, dakako, rađeni u kamenu. Mnogi su Valdecovi radovi nestali. No, javni spomenici koji su dogovoreni su i izvedeni. Izuzetak je opet onaj u bugarskom gradu Slivnu koji nikada nije realiziran zbog izbijanja Prvog svjetskog rata. Poznati navedeni radovi lijevani su u broncu i sačuvali su se do danas, kao i oni klesani u kamenu
