A central goal within quantum optics is to realize efficient, controlled interactions between photons and atomic media. A fundamental limit in nearly all applications based on such systems arises ...from spontaneous emission, in which photons are absorbed by atoms and then rescattered into undesired channels. In typical theoretical treatments of atomic ensembles, it is assumed that this rescattering occurs independently, and at a rate given by a single isolated atom, which in turn gives rise to standard limits of fidelity in applications such as quantum memories for light or photonic quantum gates. However, this assumption can in fact be dramatically violated. In particular, it has long been known that spontaneous emission of a collective atomic excitation can be significantly suppressed through strong interference in emission between atoms. While this concept of “subradiance” is not new, thus far the techniques to exploit the effect have not been well understood. In this work, we provide a comprehensive treatment of this problem. First, we show that in ordered atomic arrays in free space, subradiant states acquire an elegant interpretation in terms of optical modes that are guided by the array, which only emit due to scattering from the ends of the finite system. We also go beyond the typically studied regime of a single atomic excitation and elucidate the properties of subradiant states in the many-excitation limit. Finally, we introduce the new concept of “selective radiance.” Whereas subradiant states experience a reduced coupling to all optical modes, selectively radiant states are tailored to simultaneously radiate efficiently into a desired channel while scattering into undesired channels is suppressed, thus enabling an enhanced atom-light interface. We show that these states naturally appear in chains of atoms coupled to nanophotonic structures, and we analyze the performance of photon storage exploiting such states. We find numerically that selectively radiant states allow for a photon storage error that scales exponentially better with the number of atoms than previously known bounds.
This paper details the importance of brightness in relation to laser beams. The ‘brightness’ of lasers is a term that is generally not given much attention in laser applications or in any published ...literature. With this said, it is theoretically and practically an important parameter in laser-material processing. This study is first of a kind which emphasizes in-depth, the concept of brightness of lasers by firstly reviewing the existing literature and the progress with high brightness laser-material processes. Secondly, the techniques used to enhance the laser beam brightness are also reviewed. In addition, we review the brightness fundamentals and rationalize why brightness of lasers is an important concept. Moreover, an update on the analytical technique to determine brightness using the current empirical equations is also provided. A modified equation to determine the laser beam brightness is introduced thereafter. work The modified equation in turn is a new parameter called “Radiance Density”. Furthermore, research studies previously conducted to modify laser design to affect laser beam brightness are also discussed. The paper not only involves a review of the techniques used to improve laser beam brightness but also reviews how bright lasers can be employed to enhance/improve laser process capabilities leading to cost reduction of the laser assisted processes in areas such as manufacturing.
•A review on the correct terminology for Laser beam ‘radiance’ is presented.•All existing equations published in literature were reviewed.•A new modified equation was proposed and applied for the determination of laser beam radiance.•Effects of laser beam brightness to affect material processing was reviewed addressing gaps in knowledge.•Modification of radiance to influence laser design, and beam characterization was discussed.
In this work we have presented a special class of Kerr–Newman-NUT black hole, having its horizon located precisely at

M

l

a
and
Q
are respectively mass, NUT, ...rotation and electric charge parameters of the black hole. Clearly this choice radically alters the causal structure as there exists no Cauchy horizon indicating spacelike nature of the singularity when it exists. On the other hand, there is no curvature singularity for

, however it may have conical singularities. Furthermore there is no upper bound on specific rotation parameter
a
/
M
, which could exceed unity without risking destruction of the horizon. To bring out various discerning features of this special member of the Kerr–Newman-NUT family, we study timelike and null geodesics in the equatorial as well as off the equatorial plane, energy extraction through super-radiance and Penrose process, thermodynamical properties and also the quasi-periodic oscillations. It turns out that the black hole under study radiates less energy through the super-radiant modes and Penrose process than the other black holes in this family.
Abstract The Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) is the data assimilation system used in the Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies (CPTEC) of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) since 2013 and is currently part of the Brazilian Global Atmospheric Model (BAM), the GLobal Modeling System (SMG). Through the variational approach applied to the SMG, this system allows for the direct assimilation of radiance data, which currently represents the greatest impact for obtaining a better Numerical Weather Forecast (NWP) quality on a large scale. In order to detail the particularities necessary for the assimilation of these data and call attention to its importance for the quality of the products obtained using the SMG, this study highlights the main points of the treatment of radiance data within the GSI and presents results of an experiment using AMSU-A sensor data on board several satellites to describe the spatial and temporal behavior of the assimilated data, in quantitative and qualitative terms. Using the radiance data as a reference, in a comparison of a short-term forecast of the model with the analyses, it is observed that the latter shows a decrease in error indicating the efficiency of the radiance assimilation process, with a positive impact on the assimilation of other databases, such as the GNSS Concealment Radio evaluated here. This impact should contribute to improving the quality of the PNT products generated by CPTEC, which should be evaluated in the continuation of this research.
An operational system for autonomous above-water radiance measurements, called the SeaWiFS Photometer Revision for Incident Surface Measurements (SeaPRISM), was deployed at the Acqua Alta ...Oceanographic Tower in the northern Adriatic Sea and used for the validation of remote sensing radiometric products in coastal waters. The SeaPRISM data were compared with simultaneous data collected from an independent in-water system for a wide variety of sun elevations along with different atmospheric, seawater, and sea state conditions. The average absolute differences between the above- and in-water determinations of water-leaving radiances (computed linearly) were less than 4.5% in the 412-555-nm spectral interval. A similar comparison for normalized water-leaving radiances showed average absolute differences less than 5.1%. The comparison between normalized water-leaving radiances computed from remote sensing and SeaPRISM matchup data, showed absolute spectral average (linear) differences of 17.0%, 22.1%, and 20.8% for SeaWiFS, MODIS, and MERIS, respectively. The results, in keeping with those produced by independent in-water systems, suggest the feasibility of operational coastal networks of autonomous above-water radiometers deployed on fixed platforms (towers, lighthouses, navigation aids, etc.) to support ocean color validation activities.
