Reception studies in audiovisual translation seek to explore how translation choices affect the audience’s comprehension, emotional engagement, enjoyment, and overall viewing experience of ...audiovisual materials. This study focuses on the subtitling product and analyzes the acceptability of swear words translated through different stimuli: subtitles with softened, maintained, and intensified swearing, along with standard Netflix subtitles (control). Employing a multi-method approach, the study collected data through a survey, using questionnaires with a Likert scale and interviews, following the user-centered translation model to understand how participants receive and perceive swear words in subtitling. The results indicate that the control group had the highest acceptability of the participants, while the group with softened swear words presented the lowest acceptability rate. The analysis shows that participants across all groups reported that discomfort does not arise from reading the swear word in the subtitle but from perceiving a deliberate change in its offensive load—usually softened. The findings demonstrate that this change can lead to a breach of the contract of illusion in subtitling, as participants are exposed to the original dialogue and the translated subtitle simultaneously. In conclusion, when perceived, the change in the offensive load can redirect the viewer’s focus from the video to the subtitles, negatively affecting the enjoyment of the audiovisual experience.
Orientalist art occupies a complicated and often contradictory position in the twenty-first century. Having observed that recent exhibitions suggest significant differences between how this art is ...theorised and how it is presented to and received by the public, it is timely to interrogate anew the interpretation of Orientalist art, and to examine and bring together new academic work currently being undertaken on the topic. This special issue provides a platform for authors to survey and take up the field in multiple new directions. This introduction briefly presents the genesis of the 'Challenging Orientalism' project and comments on the six select studies of the issue. They all contribute to expanding the traditional borders of this field with a variety of materials, geographies and contexts, and offer novel studies of Orientalist art from the nineteenth century to the modern day, notably providing insights into its contemporary display and reception.
Introduction: The two best-known ball manufacturing houses, MOLTEN and MIKASA, have recently designed several models of balls with different characteristics, used in official national and ...international competitions. Objective: Determine which ball design facilitates or hinders the serve reception. Methods: The sample consisted of 146 women's matches played by 3 teams participating in high-level competitions: Italian A1, The Word Cup, Volleyball Nations League, Champions League, Türkiye Kadınlar Voleyball 1: of which a total of 62 matches where they played with the Molten ball V5M5000; 84 games were played with Mikasa balls; 39 of them played with the MVA200, and 45 with the V200W ball. The variables recorded were: paneling type, surface type, reception coefficient and performance. Results: Significant differences were found with a moderate effect size in the reception quality depending on the balls used (χ2 (10, N=9498) = 222.8, p<0.001, Cramer's V = 0.108). Taking as Coefficient reference and Reception Performance data, it was observed that the MIKASA V200W seems to be the easiest ball to receive (CER=3.50; RR=6.37), while the ball that seems to be more difficult and that causes worse performance data is the MIKASA MVA200 (CER=3.26; RR=3.63). Conclusions: Therefore, based on the records obtained, we can affirm that the type of ball influences the quality of reception of high-level women's teams
This article traces Pasolini’s engagement with Aeschylus Oresteia and the concept of the “irrational,” through which he sought to excavate patterns of ideological resistance in the classical past. I ...argue that Pasolini’s translations and adaptations of Aeschylus ultimately failed to achieve his desired ambition to forward an Aeschylus fit for the proletariat, and whose words might spark new kinds of Marxist thought. However, there is value in reading into Pasolini’s practices and his reflections on his work. Acknowledging and parsing his affects of disappointment and resignation, the broader conceptual outlines of his ambitions become clearer as gestures of kind of “failed” classical reception – an attempt to turn the classics to new political ends. An analysis of this kind of failure teaches us broader theoretical lessons about what it might mean to perform a generative and politically fruitful appropriation of the classics, necessarily confronting the entrenched ideologies of the past and their tenacious ability to reproduce themselves even in the most unexpected literary and political contexts. The article engages with selections from Pasolini’s literary, personal, and political writings from the 1960s until his death – connecting his translations and adaptations of Aeschylus to other contemporaneous essayistic, novelistic, and cinematic projects.
Literary learning materials are one of the important components used by teachers in learning activities. Good learning materials can help students achieve learning goals. Sources of literature ...learning materials tend to focus on reference books from the government. Even though there are still many literary learning materials that can be used, one is novel. The research objective was to describe the teacher's response to Satin Merah's novel by Brahmanto Anindito and Rie Yanti as literary learning material at Senior High School. This research uses a pragmatic approach. The research is based on the reception of Indonesian language teachers at the Senior High School level on the feasibility of a novel based on the feasibility assessment of the BSNP in terms of content, language, and presentation. This study indicates that Satin Merah's novel's feasibility level is 82.5%, which means that this novel is feasible and has a good reputation as literary learning material at Senior High School. The feasibility results are shown in terms of content feasibility of 84.2%, language feasibility of 81.5%, and presentation feasibility of 82%. In terms of content, this novel develops self-potential, has creativity and depth of story, and develops readers' characters to love and preserve local culture. In terms of language, the language used is following Indonesian rules and according to the target audience. In terms of presentation, this novel pays attention to the building blocks and mostly develops characters and inspires readers.
The Danish poet Per Lange (1901-91) was particularly well-received in his time, where his three collections of poetry, Kaos og Stjærnen (1926), Forvandlinger (1929), and Orfeus (1932) were reviewed by the well-known critics of the time, including his brother-in-law and expressionist poet Tom Kristensen, and the more thoughtful fellow poet Helge Rode. They all agreed in pointing out the interesting tension within the exclusive poems between sublime form, classical thematic inspiration, and the underlying modern turmoil. He later switched to the essay, publishing a total of five collections between 1953 and 1969. Aage Jørgensen's article focuses on Lange’s poetry and its striking afterlife within Danish literary history and the literary establishment in general. Per Lange was almost immediately published in anthologies, and what particularly preserved his name was the obvious mentioning of him in major literary histories and especially in the selections of his poems published in anthologies by Dansklærerforeningen (The Danish Teachers’ Association), aiming at educational use in schools. The conclusion of the article is that from 1975 on, or at least from 2000 on, Lange, overall, had disappeared from anthologies and literary histories. No attempt has been made to explain this fact, but speculation is left to the readers of the article. On the other hand, the reception history is very meticulously and carefully reviewed, so the readers will have a solid background to start from.

Pooling operations have shown to be effective on computer vision and natural language processing tasks. One challenge of performing pooling operations on graph data is the lack of locality that is ...not well-defined on graphs. Previous studies used global ranking methods to sample some of the important nodes, but most of them are not able to incorporate graph topology. In this work, we propose the topology-aware pooling (TAP) layer that explicitly considers graph topology. Our TAP layer is a two-stage voting process that selects more important nodes in a graph. It first performs local voting to generate scores for each node by attending each node to its neighboring nodes. The scores are generated locally such that topology information is explicitly considered. In addition, graph topology is incorporated in global voting to compute the importance score of each node globally in the entire graph. Altogether, the final ranking score for each node is computed by combining its local and global voting scores. To encourage better graph connectivity in the sampled graph, we propose to add a graph connectivity term to the computation of ranking scores. Results on graph classification tasks demonstrate that our methods achieve consistently better performance than previous methods.
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and spectrum sharing (SS) are two emerging multiple access technologies for efficient spectrum utilization in future wireless communications standards. In this ...paper, we present the performance analysis of a NOMA-based cooperative relaying system (CRS) in an underlay spectrum sharing scenario, considering a peak interference constraint (PIC), where the peak interference inflicted by the secondary (unlicensed) network on the primary-user (licensed) receiver (PU-Rx) should be less than a predetermined threshold. In the proposed system the relay and the secondary-user receiver (SU-Rx) are equipped with multiple receive antennas and apply selection combining (SC), where the antenna with highest instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is selected, and maximal-ratio combining (MRC), for signal reception. Closed-form expressions are derived for the average achievable rate and outage probabilities for SS-based CRS-NOMA. These results show that for large values of peak interference power, the SS-based CRS-NOMA outperforms the CRS with conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of spectral efficiency. The effect of the interference channel on the system performance is also discussed, and in particular, it is shown that the interference channel between the secondary-user transmitter (SU-Tx) and the PU-Rx has a more severe effect on the average achievable rate as compared to that between the relay and the PU-Rx. A close agreement between the analytical and numerical results confirm the correctness of our rate and outage analysis.
