The thirteenth-century Muslim mystic and poet Jalal al-Din Rumi
(1207-1273) is a popular spiritual icon. His legacy is sustained
within the mystical and religious practice of Sufism, particularly
...through renditions of his poetry, music, and the meditation
practice of whirling. In Canada, practices associated with Rumi
have become ubiquitous in public spaces, such as museums, art
galleries, and theatre halls, just as they continue to inform
sacred ritual among Sufi communities.
The Dervishes of the North explores what practices
associated with Rumi in public and private spaces tell us about
Sufism and spirituality, including sacred, cultural, and artistic
expressions in the Canadian context. Using Rumi and contemporary
expressions of poetry and whirling associated with him, the book
captures the lived reality of Sufism through an ethnographic study
of communities in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.
Drawing from conversations with Sufi leaders, whirling
dervishes, and poets, Merin Shobhana Xavier explores how Sufism is
constructed in Canada, particularly at the nexus of Islamic
mysticism, Muslim diaspora, spiritual commodity, popular culture,
and universal spirituality. Inviting readers with an interest in
religion and spirituality, The Dervishes of the North
illuminates how non-European Christian traditions, like Islam and
Sufism, have informed the religious and spiritual terrain of
Canada.
The article discusses the V. Bryusov’s translation reception of the poem by S. Mallarmé “Le vierge, le vivace et le bel aujourd’hui…”. The sonnet is an example of symbolist art, headed by S. Mallarmé ...in France, and first introduced to the Russian literary tradition by V. Bryusov. The analysis of the embodiment of S. Mallarmé’s poetic images in V. Bryusov’s translation is also important because both authors are renowned for their significant contribution to the world literature. S. Mallarmé created a new poetic language and was proclaimed a “prince of poets”, whereas V. Bryusov’s versatile creative work as well as publicism and translations earned him a status of the master of Russian symbolism. Currently there are more Russian translations of the sonnet “The Swan”, rather than any other language, and the very first one also belongs to V. Bryusov. The article considers the third and most well-known translation, the first to be named “The Swan”. The comparative analysis of the original text of the sonnet and its translation allows to identify the specificity of Bryusov’s perception of S. Mallarmé’s poetry and the peculiarities of the poetics of Russian symbolism.
Objectives
This study validates the psychometric properties and correlates of the perceived context of reception (PCOR) scale, a measure of immigrant youth's perceptions of the openness or hostility ...of their receiving communities, among Hispanic and Somali adolescents.
Methods
Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) was conducted to assess the properties of PCOR among a sample of first‐ and second‐generation Hispanic and Somali youth (N = 311) recruited in the Twin Cities metro area of Minnesota.
Results
CFA results provided evidence that the negative dimension of PCOR was structurally equivalent across ethnicity and generation and has acceptable internal consistency reliability. Negative perception of the receiving community's attitude toward newcomers was positively correlated with perceived discrimination, depressive symptoms, and anxiety.
Conclusion
Results suggest that negative PCOR is cross‐ethnically valid and that perceptions of the receiving community should be considered an important component of immigrant adaptation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between working memory (WM) capacity and speech recognition in noise in both a group of young adults and a group of older ...adults. Method: Thirty-three older adults with a mean age of 71.0 (range: 60.4-82.7) years and 27 young adults with a mean age of 21.7 (range: 19.1-25.0) years participated in the study. All participants had age-appropriate hearing and no history of central nervous system dysfunction. WM capacity was measured using the van den Noort version of the Reading Span Test, and recognition of sentences in the presence of a stationary speech-shaped noise was measured as the speech reception threshold for 50% correct identification by using the Leuven Intelligibility Sentence Test. Results: The older adults had significantly worse WM capacity scores, t(58) = 8.266, p < 0.001, and significantly more difficulty understanding sentences in noise than the younger adults, t(58) = -6.068, p < 0.001. In the group of older adults, a correlation was found (r = -0.488, n = 33, p = 0.004) between the results of the WM capacity test (Reading Span Test) and the results of the speech-recognition-in-noise test (Leuven Intelligibility Sentence Test), meaning that the higher the WM performance was, the better was the speech recognition in noise. This correlation cannot be found in young normal-hearing listeners. Conclusions: This study shows deleterious effects of age on both WM capacity and speech recognition in noise. Interestingly, only in the group of older adults was a significant relation found between WM capacity and speech recognition in noise. The current results caution against the assumption that WM necessarily supports speech-in-noise identification independently of the age and hearing status of the listener.
We have recently proposed a binaural cochlear implant (CI) sound processing strategy inspired by the contralateral medial olivocochlear reflex (the MOC strategy) and shown that it improves ...intelligibility in steady-state noise (Lopez-Poveda et al., 2016, Ear Hear 37:e138-e148). The aim here was to evaluate possible speech-reception benefits of the MOC strategy for speech maskers, a more natural type of interferer. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) were measured in six bilateral and two single-sided deaf CI users with the MOC strategy and with a standard (STD) strategy. SRTs were measured in unilateral and bilateral listening conditions, and for target and masker stimuli located at azimuthal angles of (0°, 0°), (−15°, +15°), and (−90°, +90°). Mean SRTs were 2–5 dB better with the MOC than with the STD strategy for spatially separated target and masker sources. For bilateral CI users, the MOC strategy (1) facilitated the intelligibility of speech in competition with spatially separated speech maskers in both unilateral and bilateral listening conditions; and (2) led to an overall improvement in spatial release from masking in the two listening conditions. Insofar as speech is a more natural type of interferer than steady-state noise, the present results suggest that the MOC strategy holds potential for promising outcomes for CI users.
•Benefits of a novel binaural cochlear implant sound-coding strategy are reported.•The strategy improves intelligibility and spatial masking release in speech interferers.•For single-sided deaf implant users, benefits occur in unilateral listening.•For bilateral implant users, benefits occur in unilateral and bilateral listening.•The strategy holds potential for promising outcomes for implant users.
This paper explores the cross-national variation in the gap in university expectations between native and second-generation immigrant students and whether it is moderated by characteristics of the ...country of residence of children of immigrants. Three domains have been considered at the national level: the context of reception of immigration (legal status of non-national immigrants and views about immigration of the local population); labour market segmentation and education systems (external differentiation). The study tests the general hypothesis that settings that enhance individual autonomy and widen room for choice by removing formal and informal barriers that migrants and their descendants face in everyday life and in specific domains (education and labour market) are associated with a larger gap in university expectations that is favourable to children of immigrants (a larger 'immigrant advantage'). Applying a two-stage analysis to PISA 2015 data, results provide overall support for this hypothesis. More welcoming contexts of reception are associated with a larger immigrant advantage. External differentiation is negatively associated with it, both for students attending general and vocational tracks, especially the latter, as compared to non-tracked students attending common tracks. There is not a robust association between labour market segmentation and the university expectations' gap.

Imperative of Concretization: Translational Shifts and the Models of Reception of Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s Prose – The Case Study of "The Outsider" and its Polish Versions The Article discusses ...translational reception of Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s prose in Poland on the example of his short story The Outsider. The gothic tale of a mysterious recluse visiting human society, in its original version, has no explicit interpretation due to the fact that the maincharacter’s identity is intentionally left by Lovecraft without precise and unambiguous explanation for its readers to determine. Polish versions, however, modified in the process of interlinguistic transfer, are aimed at concretization of the text, and thus solving this interpretational puzzle with different answers given by five translators (Grzegorz Iwanciw, Robert Lipski, Ewa Morycińska-Dzius, Mateusz Kopacz and Maciej Płaza), influenced by a variety of factors: image of the American writer, knowledge of his other literary works, implied readers of the translations and artistic trends popular in Polish literature.
