In the quest for superconductors with higher transition temperatures (Tc), one emerging motif is that electronic interactions favorable for superconductivity can be enhanced by fluctuations of a ...broken-symmetry phase. Recent experiments have suggested the existence of the requisite broken-symmetry phase in the high-Tc cuprates, but the impact of such a phase on the ground-state electronic interactions has remained unclear. We used magnetic fields exceeding 90 tesla to access the underlying metallic state of the cuprate YBa2Cu3O6+δ over a wide range of doping, and observed magnetic quantum oscillations that reveal a strong enhancement of the quasiparticle effective mass toward optimal doping. This mass enhancement results from increasing electronic interactions approaching optimal doping, and suggests a quantum critical point at a hole doping of pcrit ≈ 0.18.
The luminosities of type la supernovae (SNe), the thermonuclear explosions of white-dwarf stars, vary systematically with their intrinsic color and the rate at which they fade. From images taken with ...the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), we identified SNe la that erupted in environments that have high ultraviolet surface brightness and star-formation surface density. When we apply a steep model extinction law, we calibrate these SNe using their broadband optical light curves to within ∼0.065 to 0.075 magnitude, corresponding to <4% in distance. The tight scatter, probably arising from a small dispersion among progenitor ages, suggests that variation in only one progenitor property primarily accounts for the relationship between their light-curve widths, colors, and luminosities.

Long, balanced electron and hole diffusion lengths greater than 100 nanometers in the polycrystalline organolead trihalide compound CH3NH3PbI3 are critical for highly efficient perovskite solar ...cells. We found that the diffusion lengths in CH3NH3PbI3 single crystals grown by a solution-growth method can exceed 175 micrometers under 1 sun (100 mW cm–2) illumination and exceed 3 millimeters under weak light for both electrons and holes. The internal quantum efficiencies approach 100% in 3-millimeter-thick single-crystal perovskite solar cells under weak light. These long diffusion lengths result from greater carrier mobility, longer lifetime, and much smaller trap densities in the single crystals than in polycrystalline thin films. The long carrier diffusion lengths enabled the use of CH3NH3PbI3 in radiation sensing and energy harvesting through the gammavoltaic effect, with an efficiency of 3.9% measured with an intense cesium-137 source.
That the speed of light in free space is constant is a cornerstone of modern physics. However, light beams have finite transverse size, which leads to a modification of their wave vectors resulting ...in a change to their phase and group velocities. We study the group velocity of single photons by measuring a change in their arrival time that results from changing the beam's transverse spatial structure. Using time-correlated photon pairs, we show a reduction in the group velocity of photons in both a Bessel beam and photons in a focused Gaussian beam. In both cases, the delay is several micrometers over a propagation distance of ∼1 meter. Our work highlights that, even in free space, the invariance of the speed of light only applies to plane waves.
The functional capacity of a battery is observed to decrease, often quite dramatically, as discharge rate demands increase. These capacity losses have been attributed to limited ion access and low ...electrical conductivity, resulting in incomplete electrode use. A strategy to improve electronic conductivity is the design of bimetallic materials that generate a silver matrix in situ during cathode reduction. Ex situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy coupled with in situ energy-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on intact lithium/silver vanadium diphosphate (Li/Ag2VP2O8) electrochemical cells demonstrate that the metal center preferentially reduced and its location in the bimetallic cathode are rate-dependent, affecting cell impedance. This work illustrates that spatial imaging as a function of discharge rate can provide needed insights toward improving realizable capacity of bimetallic cathode systems.
Treatment of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-driven breast cancer with tyrosine kinase inhibitor lapatinib can induce a compensatory HER3 increase, which may attenuate antitumor ...efficacy. Therefore, we explored in vivo HER3 tumor status assessment after lapatinib treatment with zirconium-89 (89Zr)-labeled anti-HER3 antibody mAb3481 positron emission tomography (PET). Lapatinib effects on HER3 cell surface expression and mAb3481 internalization were evaluated in human breast (BT474, SKBR3) and gastric (N87) cancer cell lines using flow cytometry. Next, in vivo effects of daily lapatinib treatment on89Zr-mAb3481 BT474 and N87 xenograft tumor uptake were studied. PET-scans (BT474 only) were made after daily lapatinib treatment for 9 days, starting 3 days prior to 89Zr-mAb3481 administration. Subsequently, ex vivo 89Zr-mAb3481 organ distribution analysis was performed and HER3 tumor levels were measured with Western blot and immunohistochemistry. In vitro, lapatinib increased membranous HER3 in BT474, SKBR3 and N87 cells, and consequently mAb3481 internalization 1.7-fold (BT474), 1.4-fold (SKBR3) and 1.4-fold (N87). 89Zr-mAb3481 BT474 tumor uptake was remarkably high at SUVmean 5.6±0.6 (51.8±7.7%ID/g) using a 10 μg 89Zr-mAb3481 protein dose in vehicle-treated mice. However, compared to vehicle, lapatinib did not affect 89Zr-mAb3481 ex vivo uptake in BT474 and N87 tumors, while HER3 tumor expression remained unchanged. In conclusion, lapatinib increased in vitro HER3 tumor cell expression, but not when these cells were xenografted. 89Zr-mAb3481 PET accurately reflected HER3 tumor status. 89Zr-mAb3481 PET showed high, HER3-specific tumor uptake, and such an approach might sensitively assess HER3 tumor heterogeneity and treatment response in patients.
