Despite the importance of the inter-organizational nature of the marketing research process, very little research has addressed how research organizations differ and how they affect each other in the ...conduct of ethical marketing research. The purpose of this study is to examine differences among three typical participants in the research process: corporate research departments, marketing research firms, and data subcontractors. These organizations were examined with respect to having and enforcing internal codes of conduct and the awareness and enforcement of external codes of conduct. By exploring these differences, this study should help marketing researchers better understand the relationships among participants in the research process. Understanding these differences is the first step toward controlling the potential for ethical conflict among research participants.
This article discusses a practical means of combining library outreach efforts with user education techniques. The Office of Research Services and the Reference Department of Jackson Library, both of ...the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, collaborated to purchase information resources and to provide grants workshops. Through conversations, print and electronic resources were identified with an emphasis on eliminating duplication of effort and cost containment. Collaboration between the two separate academic units allowed the sharing of responsibilities for planning, advertising and conducting the workshop. This article exemplifies the importance of building on an established collaborative effort.
Walker Research Inc., through its new Walker Direct division, is leading a small number of research firms that are trying to, or have tried to, enter the telemarketing field. Professionals from both ...disciplines caution, however, that doing both is difficult because of ethical and "keep-it-separate" business considerations. Division president Steve Walker believes that there is considerable room in the marketplace to help smaller firms market better. Lorna Christie, vice-president of the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), believes that telemarketing and research are an obvious partnership, pointing out that marketing research companies have always used the telephone. Walker's target, primarily business-to-business marketers, is companies that could be using field sales and direct mail more effectively, particularly in service-oriented organizations.
The article presents the results of the analysis of scientific works, characterizing research activities in modern conditions of rapid scientific and technological progress, continuity of theoretical ...scientific thought, as well as the reflection of practical results of research of the range of issues concerning the core components of professional competence of a researcher of a higher military educational institution. The comparative characteristic of the new type of an employee defines its main components, namely mobility and professional integrated knowledge of the specialty. The conducted comparative analysis of scientific definitions of «professional competence» and «researcher’s competence» gives grounds to formulate the authors’ definition of professional competence of a researcherof a military research institution. The professional competence of a researcher is a holistic ability that is acquired through training and consists of knowledge, experience, values, and attitudes that can be fully put into practice; consists of three core components – competence of the military research organization itself, competence of the researcher, and competence of the head of the military research organization. In addition, the competence of a researcher of the research department of a higher military educational institution and scientific institution is the level of qualification that allows to successfully solve the outlined tasks taking into account the specifics of military service for an officer and the specifics of the military organization for an employee of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The content of the professional profile of the head of a military science department is revealed as a competency consisting of the following components: decision-making culture, language culture, culture of business communication, physical culture, psychological and pedagogical culture, moral culture and the moral foundations of an officer. As for the AFU officers themselves, special attention is paid to personal physical training.
This article presents an approach to enhance the detection of buried landmines by applying machine learning (ML) to signals from a nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) system. This custom-made, ...low-cost, and portable NQR system has been developed for deployment in humanitarian demining, where strong radio frequency (RF) interference and a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are important challenges for accurate detection. To tackle these problems, we have applied and tested various ML techniques to NQR signals acquired by our system in laboratory experiments with the explosive Research Department X (RDX). Results suggest that ML methods can indeed improve the detection accuracy of the NQR device, and this is confirmed further using data from field trials with our device. Importantly, the trained classifiers can be implemented with our device's field-programmable gate array (FPGA) architecture and can run with little time penalty compared with simpler but less-efficient fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based energy detection methods.
This article examines British propaganda efforts in post-war Japan, focusing on the scope of activities and limitations of the Foreign Office's Information Research Department (IRD). Although the IRD ...built a wide network of recipients for its anti-communist material in Japan, it soon faced difficulties in conducting operations when the British embassy officials started to question its influence in Japanese society - since they believed it was a culture so unique that pro forma IRD materials were unsuitable. Assessing the tensions between London and Tokyo contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the seemingly monolithic propaganda policies of the IRD.
This article analyzes and narrates the history of a clandestine propaganda project known as the Loyal African Brothers series. At the height of the Cold War, African leaders of public opinion ...received unsolicited leaflets from a group styled the Freedom for Africa Movement (FFAM). Addressed to ‘our Loyal African Brothers,’ the leaflets decried Communist penetration of Africa by connecting topical regional and global events with local histories meant to resonate with an African readership. Unknown to the recipients was that the leaflets were in reality a fabrication of the British Foreign Office’s clandestine propaganda arm, the Information Research Department. Examining the content and distribution of the series, this article uses newly declassified documents to situate Loyal African Brothers within a global ecosystem of Cold War propaganda, decolonization, and print culture. In doing so, it positions Africa as a key battleground in the cultural front of the Global Cold War.
This article explores the intersections between propaganda, intelligence and covert action through the experience of Britain's Regional Information Office (RIO) in Singapore. RIO defined its ...functions as 'propaganda intelligence': the generation of intelligence to guide propaganda output and analysis of enemy propaganda to feed into the broader intelligence picture of communist intentions. This highlights the interdependency of intelligence and propaganda. RIO worked closely with MI5 and MI6 in developing intelligence on communist China and North Vietnam. Evaluating the position of RIO within Britain's regional intelligence network also reveals some of the complexities of the late-imperial intelligence system. It illuminates the changing status of different intelligence activities and the growth of a particular intelligence culture, providing insight into how Britain engaged with the clandestine Cold War in South-East Asia.
