The morphological characteristics and health-promoting components (anthocyanins, phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and ascorbic acid) together with the in-vitro antioxidant capacity of hips collected from four rose species (Rosa canina, R. corymbifera, R. micrantha, and R. sempervirens) growing in Sicily (South Italy) were evaluated. The results revealed significant variability among the rose species as the hips collected from R. canina and R. sempervirens exhibited the highest total polyphenol contents (6784.5 and 6241.2 mg GAE/100 g DW, respectively) and highest antioxidant activities, whereas R. canina and R. micrantha hips had the highest total anthocyanin contents (2.94 and 3.86 mg CGE/100 g DW, respectively). The data showed that the analysed Sicilian rose hips have good nutritional quality, making them suitable as functional foods according to their biochemical composition and as promising sources of natural antioxidants. Also, these findings confirm that rose pseudo-fruits contain significant amounts of secondary metabolites that may positively affect human health.
To evaluate the effects of a rose hip powder (Hyben Vital(®)) made from seeds and shells on cell senescence, skin wrinkling, and aging.
A total of 34 healthy subjects, aged 35-65 years, with wrinkles ...on the face (crow's-feet) were subjected to a randomized and double-blinded clinical study of the effects of the rose hip powder, as compared to astaxanthin, a well-known remedy against wrinkles. During the 8-week study, half of the participants ingested the standardized rose hip product, while the other half ingested astaxanthin. Objective measurements of facial wrinkles, skin moisture, and elasticity were made by using Visioscan, Corneometer, and Cutometer at the beginning of the study, after 4 weeks, and after 8 weeks. Evaluation of participant satisfaction of both supplements was assessed using questionnaires. In addition, the effect of the rose hip preparation on cell longevity was measured in terms of leakage of hemoglobin through red cell membranes (hemolytic index) in blood samples kept in a blood bank for 5 weeks. Significance of all values was attained with P≤0.05.
In the double-blinded study, the rose hip group showed statistically significant improvements in crow's-feet wrinkles (P<0.05), skin moisture (P<0.05), and elasticity (P<0.05) after 8 weeks of treatment. A similar improvement was observed for astaxanthin, with P-values 0.05, 0.001, and 0.05. Likewise, both groups expressed equal satisfaction with the results obtained in their self-assessment. The rose hip powder further resulted in increased cell longevity of erythrocyte cells during storage for 5 weeks in a blood bank.
Results suggest that intake of the standardized rose hip powder (Hyben Vital(®)) improves aging-induced skin conditions. The apparent stabilizing effects of the rose hip product on cell membranes of stored erythrocyte cells observed in this study may contribute to improve the cell longevity and obstructing skin aging.
Abstract The genus Rosa L. is globally distributed and Rosa canina L. is a distinguished member of multifaceted interest. Apart from the traditional uses of R. canina in folk medicine, food and ...cosmetic industries, or its ornamental applications, its rose hips are renowned for their functional bioactive components. Thus, identifying the genetic diversity within this species is crucial for any plant breeding project. This study employed three molecular markers namely inter simple sequence repeats; (ISSRs), start codon-targeted (SCoTs), and exon-based amplified polymorphisms; (EBAPs) to conduct the first comprehensive genetic analysis of 12 R. canina genotypes. DNA extraction, marker selection, and sequences’ amplification were performed following established protocols. The resulting genetic data were analyzed for polymorphism, diversity indices, and population structure using various statistical methods including principal component analysis (PCA), unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) clustering, and STRUCTURE analysis. The ISSR analysis revealed a high level of polymorphism (81.82%) and identified two major clusters in the UPGMA dendrogram. SCoT and EBAP markers also exhibited substantial polymorphism (74.56% and 82.11%, respectively) and formed three distinct clusters. PCA indicated a consistent pattern across markers suggesting reliable genetic grouping. STRUCTURE analysis supported the presence of three genetically uniform subpopulations (K = 3) within the studied R. canina germplasm collection. This study provided a comprehensive genetic characterization of the Greek native R. canina genebank collection. The observed genetic diversity and population structure offered valuable insights for future breeding programs targeting specific R. canina genetic clusters.
The chemical composition and biological properties of three wild fruits (strawberry-tree berries, sloes and dog rose hips) were evaluated, in order to valorise these products as sources of nutrients ...and nutraceuticals. The analysed fruits contain very useful bioactive phytochemicals such as phenolics, vitamins (ascorbic acid and tocopherols) and carotenoids. Tisane is a fruit or herbal infusion, commonly referred to as herbal tea. These products are consumed as part of a balanced diet, which is closely related to the trend of a healthier lifestyle. In ...this work, tisanes prepared from rosehip (R), and herbal mixtures containing rosehip/hibiscus flowers (R/H) and rosehip/hibiscus flowers/saffron (R/H/S) were studied. Rosehip was dried by the convective drying method at 40, 50 and 60 °C. Total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total flavonol content (TFlC), total anthocyanin content (TAC), antioxidant properties (DPPHsup.∙ and ABTSsup.∙+ assays) and in vitro inhibitory potential toward α-amylase of tisanes were examined. The highest TPC (based on dry weight (dw)) was measured in tisane obtained from rosehip dried at 60 °C (37.84 mg GAE/g dw). Tisanes prepared from a R/H/S mixture had the highest values of TFC (4.66–6.13 mg QUE/g dw), TFlC (2.67–3.98 mg QUE/g dw) and TAC (1.35–2.27 mg Cy 3-glc/g dw). The highest DPPHsup.∙ scavenging activity (53.42 mg TE/g dw) was measured in rosehip (dried at 60 °C) tisane, whereas tisane prepared from a rosehip (dried at 60 °C)/hibiscus mixture expressed the best ABTSsup.∙+ scavenging activity (107.44 mg TE/g dw). All tisane samples expressed high inhibitory potential toward α-amylase, with the highest activity of 85.03% and 89.90%, measured for tisanes prepared from rosehip/hibiscus flowers mixture (rosehip dried at 50 and 60 °C, respectively).

The article discusses a new vacuum infrared equipment for drying fruits of rose hips with preservation of ascorbic acid. We have studied the drying process of rose hips in various ways (solar, ...convective and vacuum IR drying), to determine the rational version of the drying process to check the preservation of the vitamin composition of the fruit, mainly ascorbic acid. Special plants designed and manufactured for the production of dry powders from rose hips using low-vacuum and low-temperature infrared drying have been developed and manufactured. The vacuum drying unit consists of: a vacuum chamber, an electrical system for IR irradiation and instrumentation. During the drying process, the operating temperature was maintained at 65 ° C, the pressure inside the chamber was -0.8 atm and the drying time was 4 hours. With these parameters, the dogrose is dried effectively and vitamins are well preserved in its composition. In appearance, you can determine that the color and taste have not changed. Laboratory experiments were also carried out aimed at chopping and separating rose hips. Continue drying, setting the operating parameters depending on the parameters of the object. After setting the parameters of drying and its implementation, wild fruits rose hips is dehydrated to a moisture content of 12%, while the preservation of vitamins is provided in the fruit composition. As a result of an experimental study of the influence of vibration on the drying process, it has been established that the efficiency of dehydration increases to 4-5% under continuous heating conditions – at a certain frequency and amplitude. It is shown that the preservation of ascorbic acid in the composition of the pulp of the fruits rose hips with vacuum infrared drying is up to 0.77 mg%. The optimum thickness of the product layer is about 1-1.5 cm, the optimal wavelength is 3 microns, while the dehydration time of the products is an acceptable value, and the temperature of the fruits does not exceed 65 °C, the vacuum is -0.8 atm.
The medicinal value of rose hips largely depends on the contents of vitamin C and flavonoids. Rose hips contain more vitamin C than most fruits and vegetables. We were particularly interested in how ...the bioactive substances of rose hips are inherited from main rose species. The aim of the study was to compare the contents of ascorbic acid, organic acids, and phenolics in the fruits, rose hips, of Rosa pendulina L. and the hybrid Rosa pendulina L. × spinosissima L. The contents of ascorbic acid in the studied hips were higher in R. pendulina × spinosissima than in R. pendulina. The contents of total organic acids were higher in the hips of R. pendulina × spinosissima than in the hips of R. pendulina. The contents of phenolics in the hybrid were significantly higher in flesh with skin and in seeds. The contents of cyanidin-3-glucoside were higher in R. pendulina × spinosissima. We can conclude that the contents of bioactive substances in our samples is rich and could potentially be used for human consumption. The results will help to increase transparency about which rose species provide rose hips that are the most suitable for nutritional purposes.
Fruit puree is one of the most popular semi-finished products. Rose hips have a wide range of positive effects on the human body due to the biologically active substances they contain. The research ...objective was to assess the quality rosehip puree produced using a mechano-acoustic homogenizer and to define its shelf life. The study featured several samples of puree made of fresh or dried rose hips. The experiment involved two types of processing methods: traditional and mechano-acoustic. The analysis was based on standard methods. The mechano-acoustic homogenizer made it possible to combine several technological operations: grinding, homogenization, deodorization, and disinfection. The processing conditions were as follows: exposure intensity – 100–500 W/kg, time – 15–30 min, temperature – 50–65°C, disinfection time – 20–60 s, disinfection temperature – 95–97°C. Both fresh and dried rose hips puree samples produced with the help of a mechano-acoustic homogenizer had the best sensory properties, which exceeded those of the control samples by 9% for appearance, 15% for color, 21% for smell, and 30% for texture and taste. The test samples were by 10% richer in sugars, proteins, free organic acids, and minerals. They contained more biologically active substances: dietary fiber and β-carotene – by an average of 10%, phenolic substances – 20%, ascorbic acid – 40%. According to the sensory, physical, chemical, and microbiological indicators, the shelf life of rose hip puree produced using mechano-acoustic equipment was 24 months in glass packaging. The mechano-acoustic homogenizer method optimized the technological operation, and the finished product had more nutrients and better quality indicators than those of puree obtained by traditional technologies. The rose hip puree retained its quality characteristics for 24 months at ≤ 25°C and humidity ≤ 75% in glass jars in a dark place.
