This paper examines the condition of post-socialist derelict spaces. We discuss the case of a school camp from Bogda, Romania, and thus indicate a category of cases missing from the academic ...literature. Besides mapping the spatial condition of a derelict post-socialist school camp, we also examine broader political processes that followed the fall of socialism. In doing so, we seek to bridge the gap between the study of derelict and abandoned spaces and the critical perspectives on the neoliberalisation of space. Our case draws attention to the consequences of translating neoliberalism to Eastern European societies, especially on spaces deemed to be economically unproductive and socially obsolete. We have also discovered how a derelict school camp becomes a site where spontaneous and unexpected uses can proliferate. Our aim was to include in the ongoing conversations about the politics of derelict spaces a new category from a less examined geographical area.
The importance of design and technology (D&T) education has been advocated by numerous researchers over the last three decades. For instance, Nigel Cross suggests that in design education, there are ...ill-defined problems and "designerly ways of knowing" (2006). Today D&T in school education is employed globally and the common threads encompass reflective practice (Mawson, 2007) and user-centered approaches to innovation (Nicholl et al., 2013). In India, while there has been some research to envision a D&T curriculum in school education, the full potential of D&T is yet to be implemented and utilized. The current work builds on the insights gained from past D&T studies in India (Khunyakari et al., 2007) and is part of a longitudinal participatory action research (PAR) project involving a local school, its teachers, and its students (Deshmukh et al, 2018). A goal of this project is to engage students in D&T based collaborative activities, and provide them opportunities to develop creativity, design thinking, arts and crafts, language, and communication skills. This article reports observations of one such activity in the form of a design-based module conducted in a month-long summer camp for children.
Health sciences research is increasingly focusing on big data applications, such as genomic technologies and precision medicine, to address key issues in human health. These approaches rely on ...biological data repositories and bioinformatic analyses, both of which are growing rapidly in size and scope. Libraries play a key role in supporting researchers in navigating these and other information resources.
With the goal of supporting bioinformatics research in the health sciences, the University of Arizona Health Sciences Library established a Bioinformation program. To shape the support provided by the library, I developed and administered a needs assessment survey to the University of Arizona Health Sciences campus in Tucson, Arizona. The survey was designed to identify the training topics of interest to health sciences researchers and the preferred modes of training.
Survey respondents expressed an interest in a broad array of potential training topics, including "traditional" information seeking as well as interest in analytical training. Of particular interest were training in transcriptomic tools and the use of databases linking genotypes and phenotypes. Staff were most interested in bioinformatics training topics, while faculty were the least interested. Hands-on workshops were significantly preferred over any other mode of training. The University of Arizona Health Sciences Library is meeting those needs through internal programming and external partnerships.
The results of the survey demonstrate a keen interest in a variety of bioinformatic resources; the challenge to the library is how to address those training needs. The mode of support depends largely on library staff expertise in the numerous subject-specific databases and tools. Librarian-led bioinformatic training sessions provide opportunities for engagement with researchers at multiple points of the research life cycle. When training needs exceed library capacity, partnering with intramural and extramural units will be crucial in library support of health sciences bioinformatic research.
Out-of-school mathematics programs (OSMPs) can be a great benefit for students in STEM. However, little is known about how students perceive the support provided to them by such programs, especially ...with respect to students of color. In this paper, we draw upon a framework of institutional resource types (Nasir & Cooks, 2009) and performed a semantic, deductive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) to analyze how three gifted Black high school girls perceived the support provided to them by a summer mathematics camp in terms of their mathematical identity. Findings indicate that the students perceived aspects of the camp to be both supportive and unsupportive with respect to their competence, sense of belonging, and aspirations. Implications for improving OSMPs are discussed.
Universities and academic publishing cultures are transforming in developed societies around the world. This is related to the changing relations between the state and universities and to the ...increasingly common approval of neoliberal new public management doctrines. This has led to the adoption of diverse evaluation and ranking systems in science policies that in the last resort have an impact on how resources are delivered to universities, faculties and individual departments. New imperatives that researchers have faced seem to emphasize articles written in the English language that are published in so-called international quality journals. This paper scrutinizes at first the changing institutional basis and pressures that characterize current international academic publishing cultures; secondly, how such tendencies reflect the rise of academic capitalism; and thirdly, the shifting position of the well-established Finnish geographical journal Fennia in the international publishing space. A major dividing line between contemporary journals seems to exist between those that are included in the Web of Science/ISI-system of Thomson Reuters and those that are not. This paper shows by using the ISI data that Fennia has been, despite the fact that it is not an ISI-listed journal, a widely used and circulated forum for a long time. A major challenge for the future reputation of the journal will be attracting more high-quality international submissions and articles, regardless of whether the journal will be included in the ISI system. Keywords: geography, academic publishing cultures, Web of Science, academic capitalism
This paper delves with music camps, a non-formal educational approach that combines leisure activities with music, currently taking about 2000 students in Spain. Its origin is in the school camps, resulting from the combination of Rousseau's thought on education based on experience with social changes brought about by the industrial revolution, giving as a result the first organized school camps in Switzerland in the late 19th Century, with a hygienist target. Years later that experience came to Spain through the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, expanding rapidly through the rest of the country. In Catalonia, because of the importance that choral societies and their respective hiking groups had there, many colonies were organized from the choruses, including Cantarelles d'estiu by l’Orfeo Lleidatà in 1968, being the first music camp in Spain. Later this musical educational activity has spread virtually throughout the country. Their organizational characteristics, as well as their educational content, allow us to establish the intrinsic characteristics of these music camps presented in this work.
While there may be some reluctance or uncertainty from both student and parent to be apart in this way, research indicates these residential programs offer the opportunity for "communities of ...practice" and "holistic learning" that may be deeper than those found in day-camp programs.3 Private teachers, other professional music connections and the Internet are great resources for discovering the wide variety of music camps that exist today. In addition to the musical skills necessary for the position, prospective teachers should be aware that camp directors seek employees who possess strong moral character and personal flexibility.5 These traits will help them handle the demands of the position and ease concerns of parents and students.
Huffling et al present an excerpt from Connected Science Learning (CSL), NSTA's new, online-only journal. CSL highlights STEM education experiences and programs that bridge the gap between in-school ...and out-of-school settings, providing inspiration for educators, school administrators, and program professionals. The HERP Project is designed to provide citizens with increased access to herpetology and conservation education in three regions of North Carolina: the eastern Piedmont, the central Piedmont, and the Inner Coastal Plain. As one of their major endeavors, they offered summer Herpetological Research Experiences to diverse high school participants.
