This study investigates pre-service teachers’ perceptions of urban schools. We asked 41 pre-service teachers, mostly white and female, to report their perceptions of four aspects of urban schools ...(appearance and atmosphere, resources, students, and teachers) and identify the sources of their perceptions. We analyze the data qualitatively to understand how they perceive urban schools and quantitatively to determine group trends in their perceptions. Findings reveal that their perceptions of urban schools are complex, with negative and positive impressions of selected aspects of urban schools. Implications of these findings for teacher education, in particular, urban field placements and curriculum, are explored.
Adolescence’s changes may become more pronounced when living with a chronic condition (CC). This study aims to examined the differences in satisfaction with family life, perception of school ...competence and “pressure with homework” of Portuguese adolescents’ 1) living with CC; 2) how living with CC affects school participation; taking into account age, gender and family socioeconomic status (SES).
Five thousand fifty Portuguese adolescents (mean age 14 ± 1.85) of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC/WHO) were included. Results showed increased vulnerability in adolescents living with CC, presenting a lower satisfaction with family life and poor school outcomes. Younger boys, having a higher SES and not having CC are significantly associated with satisfaction with family life. Older girls, having a lower SES and living with CC were associated with more stress related to school work.
Future interventions should include these features combined with ‘listening’ to adolescents and their needs, allowing their participation in the promotion of personal health.
This study aims to shed light on representations and perceptions of school and teachers. 560 young people, aged 18-25 and living in a region of Northern Italy, participated in the study. A ...quantitative survey method using structured questionnaire to obtain the data is employed. In questionnaire participants were asked about: a) evaluation of school experience; b) perceptions of school's effectiveness in reaching traditional goals; c) perceptions of school priorities, goals, problems, activities, responsibilities; d) perceptions of teachers’ professional characteristics; e) perceptions of teachers’ weaknesses. Results show that young people's overall evaluation of both school and teachers is generally positive; however findings suggest that the legitimation of school and teachers is in general weak, especially when we observe perceptions of priorities of school and teachers’ shortcomings. This study indicates the importance of studying young people's representations and perceptions towards school and teachers as the information collected would help administrators and stakeholders to plan and maintain higher level of school effectiveness, teachers’ motivation, authority and legitimacy.
Cigarettes are responsible for nearly 443,000 deaths per year in the United States. Eighty percent of adult smokers began smoking before the age of 18. In 2009, 17.2% of high school and 5.2% of ...middle school youths reported being a smoker. Research on school perceptions suggests that "engaged" students get more from school on all levels, including reduced health risk behaviors. The purpose of this study was to identify which school perceptions are protective against tobacco use in a sample of middle school youths. Results conclude that high levels of educational attachment are significantly associated with low levels of tobacco use.
