This article aims to demonstrate that both secular and Protestant thinking of secularization are founded on a Christian and pre-Reformed “ruin” (as this notion is understood within Giorgio Agamben’s ...“philosophical archaeology”). In fact, it is shown that the thought of secularization and its path of rupture and criticism of religion have their foundation in pre-Reformation Christianity, and are already found, albeit in two completely opposite ways, in Augustine and Joachim of Fiore.
The problem addressed in the article refers to an attempt to present the phenomenon of the way, experience, and silence in the context of pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in modern times. The ...objective is to present what is popularly referred to as Camino as a dynamic and evolving perspective on human spirituality in relation to the challenges of modern times. The main thesis of the proposed study is that this type of pilgrimage offers an alternative to the phenomenon of increasing secularization. The key concepts related to the Camino were discussed and interpreted using the methods of analysis and synthesis in order to present the anthropological vision of the human being developed by Karol Wojtyła and Józef Tischner. An outline of their ideas reveals the deeper meaning of the way and experience. The main conclusion following from the analysis of the issue is that, by embarking on the Camino route, an individual is enabled to take a more in-depth look at his or her own condition, his or her perspective on relationships with others, contemplation, and new opportunities to organize and develop his or her own spirituality.
Scholars have taken a growing interest in what we call “culturalized religion”—that is, forms of religious identification, discourse, and expression that are primarily cultural in character, insofar ...as they are divorced from belief in religious dogma or participation in religious ritual. This article aims to clarify our current thinking about these phenomena so as to facilitate future theoretical and empirical work. Drawing on recent work in the sociology of culture, we distinguish between culturalized religion as a form of constituted culture, a form of pragmatic culture, and a form of identity; and theorize three principal types of relations connecting each of these modalities: reinforcing relationships, resource relationships, and destabilizing relationships. In so doing, we develop an inclusive and dynamic approach to studying culturalized religion that clears the ground for further research into its diverse modalities and manifestations, as well as their points of intersection and interaction.

Francisca Rengifo takes a look at the nascent Chilean republic through the lens of Christian marriage. For this republic, marriage expressed the internal contradictions and external ruptures of the ...process of political independence and legal change, revealing the ambiguities of this institution for the formation of the republic. Catholic marriage signified a legal and political bond that promised, on the one hand, to order social relations – by shaping the private space of the family in relation to the new political public space – and, on the other, to resolve certain deep-seated tensions between the republican project and the social reality of an essentially rural, illiterate and "backward" population. Paradoxically, the institution that was then considered essential for constituting civil society and generating social change had already been the canonical marriage in force in Hispanic-colonial society. For the republic, marriage, which the Council of Trent had established as a sacrament and regulated on the basis of the mutual consent of a man and a woman, was at the origin of the legitimate family in which future citizens were to be trained in civic virtues. This contribution explores the importance of the codification process (1855) of Christian marriage in the dissemination of this normative model and the socialization of its meaning.
It is commonly claimed that science and religion are logically and psychologically at odds with one another. However, previous studies have mainly examined American samples; therefore, ...generalizations about antagonism between religion and science may be unwarranted. We examined the correlation between religiosity and attitudes toward science across 11 studies including representative data from 60 countries (N = 66,438), nine convenience samples from the United States (N = 2,160), and a cross-national panel sample from five understudied countries (N = 1,048). Results show that, within the United States, religiosity is consistently associated with lower interest in science topics and activities and less positive explicit and implicit attitudes toward science. However, this relationship is inconsistent around the world, with positive, negative, and null correlations being observed in various countries. Our findings are inconsistent with the idea that science and religion are necessarily at odds, undermining common theories of scientific advancement undermining religion.
Religion has been in general neglected or even seen as a taboo subject in organizational research and management practice. This is a glaring omission in the business and society and business ethics ...literatures. As a source of moral norms and beliefs, religion has historically played a significant role in the vast majority of societies and continues to remain relevant in almost every society. More broadly, expectations for responsible business behavior are informed by regional, national, or indigenous cultures, which in many parts of the world are heavily influenced by religious belief systems and religious institutions. In this essay, we discuss examples of how religion has functioned as a macro social force affecting business and society, discuss some of the key questions and issues related to research in this domain, offer some observations about why religion may be problematic with regard to its effects on business, and conclude by summarizing the articles contained in the special issue.
