Through a close examination of the Apocalypsis goliae episcopi ("The revelation of bishop Goliath"), this essay explores the limitations of human cognition in recording visionary experience. Scholars ...frequently look to visionary texts for imaginative reflections on the written conditions of memory and identity that characterize the fundamentally bookish cultures of the late Middle Ages. The Apocalypsis obsessively describes acts of inscription, announcing throughout its narrative an interest in the complex relationships that emerge between and among books, texts, authors, and readers. Turning on a provocative memorial metaphor--when the dreamer's angelic guide inscribes a record of the vision onto the physical matter of the dreamer's brain--the poem both performs and discloses a bifurcation central to all reading experience. At once parodic and sincere, the Apocalypsis suggests that the experience it describes, as with all visionary experience, is constituted by someone other than the dreamer of the dream.
Persius refers to Romans with names drawn from the Roman past, namely Polydamas et Troiades, Titos, Romulidae, and Romule. The names are chosen due to their multi-layered semantics and allusions that ...result into irony and generate paradoxes that make up the satire. This paper aims to highlight the employment of these designators as a case study in literary onomastics in Roman satire. It comments on the function of the names in their context with a focus on the treatment of the Roman past through them; then it analyses the emerging patterns as additional aspects of Persius’ style and critique. KEYWORDS: Persius’ satires, Romans, aristocracy, effeminacy, onomastics irony.
The boundaries between news and entertainment, and between public affairs and pop culture, have become difficult if not impossible to discern. At the intersection of those borders sits The Daily Show ...with Jon Stewart, a hybrid blend of comedy, news, and political conversation that is difficult to pigeon hole. Although the program often is dismissed as being "fake" news, its significance for political communication may run much deeper. This study first locates The Daily Show within an emerging media environment defined by the forces of technological multiplication, economic consolidation, and discursive integration, a landscape in which "real" news is becoming increasingly harder to identify or define. It then offers an interpretive reading of the program that understands the show not as "fake news," but as an experiment in journalism. It argues that the show uses techniques drawn from genres of news, comedy, and television talk to revive a journalism of critical inquiry and advance a model of deliberative democracy. Given the increasing popularity of the program, this essay concludes that The Daily Show has much to teach us about the possibilities of political journalism in the 21st century.

This paper utilizes survey methodology to explore the ethical perspectives of political cartoonists following the Charlie Hebdo shootings. Ethics positions theory is considered. Participants tended ...to be either situationists, absolutists, or exceptionists. Political ideology was associated with relativism scores. Findings showed that most of the participants (74 percent) reported that they drew a cartoon in response to the shootings. Participants expressed feelings of anger and sadness following the shootings. They reported that they drew cartoons illustrating free speech, cartoonists, pencils and pens, or violence following the shootings.
For a politician who was often described as lacking charisma, Angela Merkel, during her tenure as German chancellor, emerged as a social media icon and a popular subject on the small screen. This ...article looks at a cross-section of visual representations and iterations of Merkel through various modes of intertextuality: social media, novels, and made-for-TV-movies. However, the primary analysis will remain on a series of made-for-TV-movies released in Germany in the mid-2010s. These satires provide an interesting case study both in the presentation of the politician as celebrity, as well as the tension between feminism and post-feminism readings.
