Generally known for its advanced, often radical suggestions of reform in politics, religion, morality, and human behavior, the Greek Enlightenment has long been studied in terms of its doctrines and ...theories. To understand the environment in which the new ideas flourished and their impact, Friedrich Solmsen explores the novel intellectual methods that developed during the period.
A variety of new modes of thought was introduced at this time or, if known before, was applied with delight in experimentation. Among those that Friedrich Solmsen examines are new methods of argumentation: persuasion aimed at the control of man's emotions; Utopian speculation; experiments with language; and the emergence of a secular psychology and its use in the reconstruction of human motives and historical events.
Concentrating on the work of nonphilosophical authors such as the historian Thucydides and the tragedian Euripides, the author presents a portrait of a restless and spirited age engaged in an adventure of reason.

In order to identify genesis of moral-ethical phenomenon, author starts from certainty of its historical, and not “eternal”, character. Its rudimental form is found in proto-moral consciousness and ...proto-ethical philosophical standpoint of the Sophists. Resting upon Aristotle and Hegel, author reconstructs Hellenic system of ethical life (Sittlichkeit) and shows the meaning of historical turn the Sophists made within that system by their own philosophical and cultural mission. Within this turn, moral-ethical phenomenon was born as a product of sophistic confrontation of principle of reason (reasoning) with traditional representational consciousness.
From a workshop held at Université Laval,Perceptions of the Second Sophistic and its Timesbrings together fourteen essays and a range of perspectives, including work from scholars in literature, ...philology, linguistics, history, political science, sociology, and religion.
What emerges is a complex reappraisal of Sophism that reorients criticism of this mode of argumentation, expands understanding of Sophistic contributions to classical rhetoric, and opens avenues for ...further scholarship.
This book provides the first general account of the works of the Latin writer Apuleius, most famous for his great novel the `Metamorphoses' or `Golden Ass'. Living in second-century North Africa, ...Apuleius was more than an author; he was an orator and professional intellectual, Platonist philosopher, extraordinary stylist, relentless self-promoter, as well as a versatile author of a remarkably diverse body of other work, much of which is lost to us.
« The sound of the praise in Late Antiquity : between Himerius’mousike and Julian’s Misopogon ».
This paper focuses on the role of the sound in the public speeches addressed to Roman officials. As a ...matter of fact, in Late Antiquity acclamations were very important in Roman imperial ceremony : praise and blame were expressed through sound and silence. The orations of Himerius (Or. 46-47 ; Or. 39) are analysed here in order to revalue his concept of panegyric as mousikè (poetry, music and song) in the theatra, even though Himerius was a model of ‘singing sophist’ criticized by contemporary philosophers. An interesting aspect of this controversy is represented by the introduction of Julian’s Misopogon.
