How can research into culturally responsive and sustaining education (CRSE) inform and transform science teaching and learning? What approaches might teachers use to study CRSE in their classrooms? ...What are teachers learning from their research that might be transferable to other classrooms and schools?
In this practical resource, teacher researchers from the Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education Professional Learning Group based in New York City provide insights for educators on how to address complex educational and sociocultural issues in the science classroom. Highlighting wide-ranging and complex problems such as the COVID-19 pandemic and racial injustice and how they affect individual science instruction settings, with a particular focus on urban and high-need school environments, chapters examine and describe what CRSE is and means for science teaching.
Through individual and collaborative research studies, chapters help readers understand various approaches to developing and implementing CRSE strategies in their classrooms and promote students' identification with and affinity for science. Teachers describe the questions driving their investigations, data, and findings, and reflect on their roles as agents of change. Chapters also feature discussion and reflection questions, and include examples of assignments, protocols, and student work that teachers have piloted in their classes.
This book is ideal for pre-service and in-service science teachers and teacher educators across grade levels. It provides support for professional learning activities, as well as undergraduate and graduate teacher education courses. It may be particularly useful in science methods; multicultural education; and diversity, equity, and inclusion courses with a focus on CRSE. This book not only describes one group's approach to CRSE in science education, but also takes the next step to show how CRSE can be applied directly to the science classroom.

This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of using the reciprocal teaching learning model on the higher order thinking skills and science process skills of students. The research method used is a ...Quasi Experiment. Based on the results of the research calculated by the independent sample t-test from the post-test results of the control class of 66.97 and the experimental class of 77.71, it was obtained tcountmore than ttable (10.167 more than 1.996) and the percentage of observation results from the control class average of 73 and the mean The experimental class average is 76, so that the tcount value is greater than the ttable ((3.656 more than 1.996). Then the effectiveness of the reciprocal teaching model is known through the effect size test and the value of d = 0.5 is obtained. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the reciprocal model This teaching is effective in improving higher order thinking skills and science process skills.
This paper provides a rationale for the changes advocated by the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards. It provides an argument for why the model embedded in ...the Next Generation Science Standards is seen as an improvement. The Case made here is that the underlying model that the new Framework presents of science better represents contemporary understanding of nature of science as a social and cultural practice. Second, it argues that the adopting a framework of practices will enable better communication of meaning amongst professional science educators. This, in turn, will enable practice in the classroom to improve. Finally, the implications for teacher education are explored.
The general objective of this study is to understand the use of the Didactic Book (LD) of Natural Sciences in classes from 6th to 9th year of rural schools. Specifically, the research aimed to know ...the methodological uses of the Natural Sciences LD in classes from the 6th to the 9th year of elementary school in rural schools and to identify how teachers use the LD of Natural Sciences. Descriptive research was carried out, with a qualitative approach, since this type of research was the one best suited to the object and objectives of the study. Data collection instruments, simple observation and interview were used as instruments. The study was carried out in one of the rural located in the municipality of Juazeiro do Piauí. The interlocutors were two teachers who works with the curricular component of Natural Sciences and who joined the research in a free and conscious way. The results point out that methodological tensions in the use of the Natural Sciences LD, include failures in the selection process and the availability by the Ministry of Education (MEC) of materials that do not value peasant reality. Thus, it is necessary to implement continuous training processes through which teachers reflect on their conceptions of rural and peasant culture and dynamize the ways of using LDs.
