Philosophy of Medicine has for a long time been preoccupied with analyzing the concepts of health, disease and illness. Relatively speaking, the concept of medicine itself has received very little ...attention. This paper is a contribution to the relatively neglected debate about the nature of medicine. Building on the work of Alex Broadbent (Broadbent, 2018a, b), Chadwin Harris (Harris, 2018) and Thaddeus Metz (Metz, 2018), in this paper I question the persuasiveness of Broadbent’s account of the “core business” of medicine, The Inquiry Thesis, and propose an alternative: a revised version of The Curative Thesis, which I coin The Best Available Intervention Thesis. Crudely, this suggests that Medicine is the sustained and organised effort to determine and prescribe the best available treatment (curative or preventative) for patients.

The examination of research theses has only relatively recently attracted research interest that has focused on what examiners do and how consistent they are. The research questions in this study ...address firstly whether PhD and research masters theses were treated by examiners as qualitatively different on 12 indicators of importance across the areas: contribution of the thesis, the literature review, approach and methodology, analyses and results and presentation. Secondly what was the examiner assessment of quality of a recently examined thesis on the same indicators and, finally, how well the indicators were reflected in a holistic assessment of thesis quality. The work reported here draws on the responses of 353 PhD and 74 research masters thesis examiners. Findings showed the examiners generally rated the relative importance of the indicators very similarly at both degree levels. Further the order of importance across indicators was essentially the same for the two levels of thesis. Anticipated differences did emerge with the examiners giving higher quality gradings for all contribution indicators for PhD as compared with research masters theses. The 12 specific quality indicators, individually and collectively were strongly related to the holistic assessment of thesis quality, particularly at the PhD level.
This paper reports on a cross-disciplinary study of the rhetorical structure of Three Minute Thesis (3MT) presentations, an increasingly popular yet largely unexamined academic speech genre. The ...study analyzed a corpus of 142 presentations by PhD students from four disciplines chosen to operationalize two widely discussed disciplinary distinctions (i.e., hard vs. soft and pure vs. applied disciplines). The analysis identified eight distinct rhetorical moves in the 3MT presentations, including six obligatory moves (i.e., Orientation, Rationale, Purpose, Methods, Implication, and Termination) and two optional ones (i.e., Framework and Results). Further analyses revealed statistically significant associations between disciplinary affiliation and the likelihood to employ three moves (i.e., Framework, Methods, and Results). These relationships are explained in terms of the dominant epistemological codes at work in the different disciplines. The findings have important implications for graduate students, 3MT tutors, EAP instructors, and other academics involved in preparing PhD students for 3MT competitions and teaching spoken academic discourse in general.
Dematerialization through information technology aids in advancing environmental sustainability. Replacing a bound thesis with an e-thesis for a university dissertation will be a complementary ...paradigm shift for higher environmental performance. Hence, the study intended to determine and compare the environmental performance parameters of conventional paper-based bound-thesis and e-thesis. Moreover, the study aimed to identify the activities causing higher environmental burdens during the production of bound and e-thesis. Open LCA 1.11 was employed for a conventional bound thesis with its e-version submitted by the undergraduates of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. The study utilized U.S. EPA life-cycle inventory data. The analysis demonstrated that the overall global warming potential of a 40-page hard cover thesis was 4,839,000.00 kg CO2-eq to which paper and cover import and paper manufacturing stages contributed more than 99% (4,830,000.0 kg CO2-eq). In comparison, a 0.084 MB soft copy of an e-thesis reported a negligible (0.09936 kg CO2-eq) global warming potential value. Ozone formation-human health, ozone formation-terrestrial ecosystems, terrestrial acidification, fine particulate matter formation, and marine eutrophication potential were 265,584.31 kg NOx eq, 265,583.21 kg NOx eq, 177,451.5 kg SO2 eq, 52,948 kg PM2.5 eq, and 29,041.0 kg N-eq for bound thesis production system. Except for the stratospheric ozone depletion impact and water consumption, environmental performance indicators of e-thesis were superior to the conventional-bound thesis. The study recommends the preparation of e-thesis as an environmentally sound approach. Switching to renewables, extended lifespan, and material recycling of devices at the end of use, sustainable forestry practices, process optimization, and cleaner production technologies can further enhance the environmental performance of e-thesis.

•The environmental burdens of the bound thesis and its alternative e-thesis were analyzed using OpenLCA 1.11 from a lifecycle perspective.•The global warming potential of the 40-page hard cover bound-thesis was 4839 ton CO2-eq with the marine eutrophication of 29,041 kg N-eq.•Paper manufacturing and the transportation of paper and hardcover by ship accounted for 99% of the total global warming potential of a bound thesis.•E-thesis exhibiting superior environmental performance compared to bound thesis reporting only 99 g CO2 eq.•The environmental cost of e-thesis reading is higher than e-thesis downloading.•Water consumption and stratospheric ozone depletion impact categories exhibited higher values for e-thesis than the bound thesis.
The Lovász local lemma (LLL) is a technique from combinatorics for proving existential results. There are many different versions of the LLL. One of them, the lefthanded local lemma, is particularly ...well suited for applications to two player games. There are also constructive and computable versions of the LLL. The chief object of this thesis is to prove an effective version of the lefthanded local lemma and to apply it to effectivise constructions of non-repetitive sequences. The second goal of this thesis is to categorize some classes of cohesive powers. We completely describe both the isomorphism types of cohesive powers of equivalence structures and injection structures, as well as clarify the relationship between these cohesive powers and their original structures. We also describe the finite condensation of cohesive powers of computable copies of the integers as a linear order by cohesive sets whose complement are computably enumerable. Finally, we investigate the possibility of decomposing problems in the Weihrauch degrees into a product of first order part and second order part. We give a preliminary result in this direction. Computability theoretic aspects of Polish metric spaces are studied by adapting notions and methods of computable structure theory. In this dissertation, we mainly investigate index sets and ...classification problems for computably presentable Polish metric spaces. We find the complexity of a number of index sets, isomorphism problems, and embedding problems for computably presentable metric spaces. We also provide several computable structure theory results related to some classical Polish metric spaces such as the Urysohn space

Anatomical differences between adults and adolescents and between left and right varicoceles were shown in this work. We designed a standardized and reproducible method for pressure measurement in ...the inguinal internal spermatic vein (ISV). We demonstrated that the mean absolute pressure in the ISV in the upright position is higher than the veno-capillary pressure in the testicle, and hence could impair spermatogenesis prompting the need for treatment in varicoceles. Histoacryl transparent and Glubran2, the current commercially available adhesives for the treatment of varicoceles, do not differ with regard to efficiency, safety and tolerance during and after embolization. Both adhesives cause a mild pain in 30% of the patients in the week after embolization. The radiation exposure is low during embolizations of varicoceles with highly viscous liquid products. Therefore, the endovascular treatment with glue is an efficient, safe and tolerable method of treatment for varicoceles when applicable.
The trend towards the democratisation and sharing of academic research has brought about numerous changes in the type and number of genres researchers have to navigate. One recent addition to the ...palette of university genres is the Three Minute Thesis presentation (3MT). The primary purpose of this article is to identify the principal features of 3MT presentations and examine the recontextualisation strategies that doctoral students need in order to adapt their research to the non-specialist 3MT audience. Basing our study on a corpus of 30 presentations in the sciences and humanities, our analysis of these recontextualisation strategies is divided into two main categories: a) strategies to tailor the scientific information to the audience's knowledge base, focussing on the rhetorical structure and the explanatory strategies used to make the topic comprehensible, and b) strategies to engage the audience's interest using various personalisation and interactional strategies as well as attention-getting devices such as catchy titles, pictures and jokes. Results suggest that 3MTs possess a very stable cluster of features, with their own rhetorical strategies, register, and overall generic structure. The article ends with a discussion of the impact of some modern societal and media trends on 3MTs.
•In-depth genre analysis of Three Minute Thesis presentations (3MTs).•PhD research adapted to non-specialist audience using recontextualisation strategies.•Information tailored by content selection and reformulation of terminology.•Audience engagement achieved by personalisation and interactional strategies.•Societal and media trends have a discernible influence on 3MTs

Thesis writing is an essential component of postgraduate training in India. The primary intention is to train the student in research methodology which is different from doctoral dissertation. ...Writing a thesis protocol is the first written document of the proposed research. It not only gives a glimpse of the topic under plan but also paves the path of proposed research by setting the rules, boundaries and limits of the research. It safeguards not only the researcher but the volunteers/ subjects also.
