Globalization characterizes the economic, social, political, and cultural spheres of the modern world. Tourism has long been claimed as a crucial force shaping globalization, while in turn the ...developments of the tourism sector are under the influences of growing interdependence across the world. As globalization proceeds, destination countries have become more and more susceptible to local and global events. By linking the existing literature coherently, this study explores a number of themes on economic globalization in tourism. It attempts to identify the forces underpinning globalization and assess the implications on both the supply side and the demand side of the tourism sector. In view of a lack of quantitative evidence, future directions for empirical research have been suggested to investigate the interdependence of tourism demand, the convergence of tourism productivity, and the impact of global events.

Managing tourism destinations has become increasingly challenging due to the tourism ecosystem's complex nature. Tourism destinations can be seen as complex systems consisting of interactive agents ...such as tourists, tourism attractions, service providers, destination marketing organizations (DMOs), and the local communities. These agents have various types of interactions with each other in real-time. This paper introduces how the Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) approach can be used in tourism research. ABM is a computational modelling approach that examines the tourism system's dynamic behaviour based on the agents' interactions and simulates how the microscopic interactions lead to macroscopic phenomena. ABM can be leveraged with existing behavioural theories and various types of data to address complex topics such as sustainability and social equity. This study reviewed existing literature that adopts ABM throughout tourism planning, development, and management stages. We identified seven themes where ABM would be appropriate for studying tourism: sustainable tourism, tourist decision-making behaviour, tourist flow management, crisis management, cultural tourism management, natural tourism management, and transportation management. We further propose an agent-based modelling framework with key agents and attributes to guide the modelling process for tourism researchers and practitioners.
The study identifies the main indicators and prerequisites for digital transformation of the tourism industry and the current problematic issues experienced at the level of regional management; the ...forecast and key features of a new evolutionary stage in the branch. i.e., the development of smart digital tourism, is provided; an extended model of tourism destination «7A» is described, taking into account the digital transformation factor; the role of the digital service portfolio in how the reputation of a tourism destination is formed and perceived is outlined; the systematization criteria and classification of digital tools and services used in regional administration and operational management of tourist activity are listed; KPI for tourist sites around the world are attributed; the structural analysis of domestic tourist sites is described; a critical assessment for the digitalization of the national tourism destinations across Ukraine is provided; the current digital channels for promoting the national tourist product are offered.
Keywords: digitalization of tourism industry, smart digital tourism, evolution of tourism, management and administration of tourism regions, tourism destination model, digital services in tourism, destination management organization (DMO), tourism destination reputation, reputation management.

While the determinants of tourism demand have been extensively investigated, the impact of corruption on tourism development is less documented. To fill the gap in the literature, this study uses ...various indicators of tourism development and corruption measurement to examine the influence of corruption on tourism development in 30 African countries over the period 1996-2020. The empirical evidence is based on the fixed effect and panel corrected standard errors (PCSE) estimation techniques. The results unveil that the impact of corruption on tourism development is negative and statistically significant, both for domestic and international tourists. It indicates as corruption worsens, tourism-related investments and tourism destinations are negatively affected. These results support the sand-in-the-wheel hypothesis. Additionally, macroeconomic indicators like GDP growth, foreign direct investment and infrastructural development are found to be ideal for promoting the tourism sector. However, the magnitude of the impact of the variables varies across various specifications, particularly for the sub-Saharan sample group. Based on the results, policy implications are suggested from the study. The results recommended that institutional reforms and promotion of good governances are critical in order to maximize the benefits of tourism sector.
Turkey, an emerging economy, ranked 8th among the most visited countries in the world in 2017. Given the importance of the tourism sector in Turkey, it is of utmost importance to identify the ...dynamics of tourism demand to achieve sustainable tourism. The aim of this article is, therefore, to explore the demand-side factors that affect the number of international tourist arrivals to Turkey. To this end, an augmented gravity model has been employed to analyze the factors affecting the number of international tourists visiting Turkey from the top 25 originating countries from 1998 to 2017. The results show that the gravity model is very effective in explaining the tourist arrivals to Turkey. Empirical findings suggest that per capita income of both origin country and Turkey, relative exchange rate, and globalization positively affect the demand for tourism, while it is negatively affected by consumer price index, violence/terrorism, household debt level, and bilateral distance between Turkey and the origin country.
In recent years, when diversification in tourism has gained a momentum, geological formations have begun to take place among countries’ tourism values. Geological formations are not only geographical ...elements but also they are considered in the context of concrete cultural heritage and tourist attractions of a country and they constitute the basis for geo-tourism. In this study, Kula Burn Country (Katakekaumene), located in Manisa, Turkey, is evaluated from the standpoint of its tourism values. The region is important as a potential destination, close to Izmir, as well as being an important geological area where young volcanoes take place. Qualitative research technique was used in the study. Data were collected with document analysis and field survey method. Interviewing and observation techniques were used in field research. The written texts obtained were evaluated with content analysis. Results show that the Kula-Burns country needs physical and legal protection, trained personnel, financial resources, visitor sensitivity and local awareness for sustaining its inheritance and momentum in tourism. In addition, the Burned Country has been planned as a UNESCO GGN member (Global Geo-Park Geopark Network) geo-park. If the eliminated shortcomings are overcome, it is expected that Burned Country can complete the relevant geo-park membership criteria and retain the right to use its green certificate while developing as a tourist destination simultaneously.
There is a worldwide trend of increasing interest in cultural tourism products, and the World Tourism Organization predicts that the cultural tourism market will be one of the five leading segments ...of the tourism market in the future. Local culture is an important feature of a tourist destination, and thanks to tourism, it becomes a flywheel of social and economic development. Cultural tourism is focused on cultural attractions and activities as the main reasons for traveling, and the participation of cultural tourism in all tourist movements is increasing. Thus in France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, income from tourists whose primary goal is to get acquainted with cultural goods and cultural achievements exceed 1/3 of total tourism revenues. Starting from the above, this paper focuses on the analysis of the key problems of the development of cultural tourism and the possibilities of enriching tourist destinations with cultural offer through the development of a cultural product, as a way of increasing the value of a comprehensive tourist offer and attracting a large number of tourists. It concludes with a brief analysis of the key issues for this field of cultural policy in the Republic of Serbia and recommendations on how to make a tourist attraction from a cultural resource and to achieve greater satisfaction of the tourists with their stay in a destination.
