This study examines the effect of immigration on sector unemployment rates in Japan from 2009 to 2018. While previous studies have explored the effects of immigration using either nationwide or ...regional unemployment rates, analysis by industry units has been rarely conducted. The results of the analysis reveal that unemployment rates decrease with an increase in the number of immigrant workers in industry sectors with labor shortages; otherwise, they are neutral to the labor market. Since the analysis using industry sector units provides different implications from that using geographic units, it underscores industry-specific immigration effects in the study of unemployment rates.
Purpose: Research purposes of analyzing the Human Development Index open unemployment rate to Poverty with intervening variables of economic development in Central Java Province in 2015-2020.
...Theoretical framework: Human Development measures human development achievements based on a number of basic components of quality of life. Unemployment is a macroeconomic problem that directly affects human survival. Poverty is the inability to meet the minimum standard of living, where the measurement of poverty is based on consumption. The major theory used relates to the Neo-liberal and Social Democracy paradigms. Economic growth has a correlation with the number of poor people, where high economic growth will have an impact on reducing the number of poor people, with the assumption that economic growth is pro-poor.
Design/methodology/approach: This research uses a quantitative approach. The analysis uses the website's secondary data published by the Central Statistics Agency. The number of data is 210, processed using AMOS to determine the direct and indirect effects and a Sobel calculator to assess the impact of the intervening variables.
Findings: The results showed that the Human Development Index did not significantly impact Economic Growth, the Open Unemployment Rate substantially influenced Economic Growth, and the Human Development Index significantly affected Poverty. Open Unemployment Rate has no significant impact on Poverty. Economic growth has no significant effect on Poverty. The Growth of Economic can not mediate impact human development index on Poverty. Economic growth can not mediate result of the open unemployment rate to Poverty
Research, Practical & Social implications: the research can be carried out in different places with a broader objective. Provincial or district/city governments in Central Java Province as policy material and or policy projections in the future
Originality/value: The findings of this study can be generalized to different provinces so that they can be used as material for government policies to increase the human development index, reduce unemployment, increase economic growth so that poverty will decrease.
The standard New Keynesian model with staggered wage setting is shown to imply a simple dynamic relation between wage inflation and unemployment. Under some assumptions, that relation takes a form ...similar to that found in empirical wage equations—starting from Phillips' (1958) original work—and may thus be viewed as providing some theoretical foundations to the latter. The structural wage equation derived here is shown to account reasonably well for the comovement of wage inflation and the unemployment rate in the US economy, even under the strong assumption of a constant natural rate of unemployment.
We examine how a 16-week cut in potential unemployment insurance (UI) duration in Missouri affected search behavior of UI recipients and the aggregate labor market. Using a regression discontinuity ...design (RDD), we estimate marginal effects of maximum duration on UI and nonemployment spells of 0.45 and 0.25, respectively. We simulate the unemployment rate implied by the RDD estimates assuming no market-level externalities. The implied response closely approximates the decline in the unemployment rate following the benefit cut, suggesting that, even in a period of high unemployment, the labor market absorbed the influx of workers without crowding out other job seekers.
Exogenous OPEC and non-OPEC oil supply cuts, which are identified within an SVAR model with unplanned oil supply outage as an external instrument, decrease industrial production and raise ...unemployment rate in the euro area. However, the transmissions to consumer price are different when OPEC and non-OPEC oil supply cuts are respectively considered. Further analyses are implemented with datasets of different sectors and individual countries. The results are robust against different identification strategies and variations in empirical specifications. Finally, our findings signify policy implications for enhancing energy security in the European Union.

This paper investigates the dynamic relationships between the crude oil price (COP) and the unemployment rate (UR) in Russia and Canada with a bootstrap subsample rolling-window causality test. This ...approach relaxes linear assumptions, fully considers structural breaks, and captures time-varying causalities between variables; thus, it performs better than traditional long-run causality tests. The empirical results indicate that there are dynamic causal links between the COP and the UR in certain subsample intervals, which does not fully support Carruth's model. Furthermore, the causality between the COP and the UR in Russia can be described based on Western sanctions, China-Russia energy cooperation and the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast, a decrease in major oil companies' production and the development of U.S. shale oil are employed to explain the fluctuating relationship between the COP and the UR in Canada. Our study identifies potential heterogeneous reasons for the dynamic causalities of major exporting countries, and it reveals novel influencing mechanisms between these two variables. Thus, some policies are suggested to alleviate shocks from oil prices, including oil risk management and oil cooperation for Russia and oil export structural adjustments and monitoring mechanism establishment for Canada.
•Both parameter stability and sub-sample rolling-window causality tests are utilized in this paper.•The time-varying causal relationship between crude oil price and unemployment rate is discovered.•Heterogeneous explanations and policy responses are provided for Canada and Russia respectively.
This paper provides compelling evidence that cyclical factors account for the bulk of the post-2007 decline in the U.S. labor force participation rate (LFPR). We then formulate a stylized New ...Keynesian model in which the LFPR is practically acyclical during "normal times" but drops markedly following a large and persistent aggregate demand shock. These considerations have potentially crucial implications for the design of monetary policy, especially when interest rate adjustments are constrained by the zero lower bound; specifically, monetary policy can induce a more rapid recovery of the LFPR by allowing the unemployment rate to fall below its natural rate.
