Robotic handling systems are increasingly applied in distribution centers. They require little space, provide flexibility in managing varying demand requirements, and are able to work 24/7. This ...makes them particularly fit for e-commerce operations. This paper reviews new categories of automated and robotic handling systems, such as shuttle-based storage and retrieval systems, shuttle-based compact storage systems, and robotic mobile fulfillment systems. For each system, we categorize the literature in three groups: system analysis, design optimization, and operations planning and control. Our focus is to identify the research issue and operations research modeling methodology adopted to analyze the problem. We find that many new robotic systems and applications have hardly been studied in academic literature, despite their increasing use in practice. Because of unique system features (such as autonomous control, flexible layout, networked and dynamic operation), new models and methods are needed to address the design and operational control challenges for such systems, in particular, for the integration of subsystems. Integrated robotic warehouse systems will form the next category of warehouses. All vital warehouse design, planning, and control logic, such as methods to design layout, storage and order-picking system selection, storage slotting, order batching, picker routing, and picker to order assignment, will have to be revisited for new robotized warehouses.

The IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques (MTT) is the premier journal for the dissemination of scientific results regarding the design and application of high-frequency devices, ...circuits, and systems. Covering all theoretical and practical aspects of radio-frequency technology for the last 63 years, it is regarded by the vast majority of researchers and engineers as the most convenient vehicle to publish a work worth sharing or to find a concept, tutorial, or technique worth knowing.
The everyday needs of people with disabilities represent a challenge in designing new and innovative services. The capabilities provided by modern communication technologies designed by assistive ...technology models can help people with disabilities perform their work tasks. The user environment has to be adapted to the guidelines of the universal design and services should be available regardless of user requirements. This paper proposes a conceptual model for informing the people with disabilities regardless of the disability degree using a smart wearable device (smart wristband). All relevant information is integrated through the warehouse management system to efficiently perform all the appropriate processes. Activity of informing users is viewed from multiple scenarios, the work environment and work tasks. For the purpose of real-time informing, industrial internet of things environment and appropriate sensors were used. The presented model aims at raising the quality of life for the people with disabilities in the work environment and rising business efficiency based on industry 4.0 concept.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is no longer a future milestone, but a reality. Companies in different industrial sectors around the world are already incorporating Industry 4.0 skills and ...technologies into their philosophy and practices. This new industrial era requires universities to adapt and train future engineers in these skills and competencies. One area of Industry 4.0 that is developing at a frenetic pace is logistics. The set of principles, knowledge, and techniques of Industry 4.0 applied to logistics is referred to as Logistics 4.0. Training students in Logistics 4.0 is crucial for their professional future in this new industrial scenario. One of the learning strategies that can be most fruitful in this regard is Kolb’s experiential learning model, which can be exploited through final projects. In this sense, this work illustrates an approach to acquire these skills through the design of a laboratory prototype storage system using low-cost technologies for academic use such as LEGO Mindstorms and Android Studio together with smartphones. By following this approach, engineering students will “learn by doing” the concepts and skills they will need in their future careers in Logistics 4.0.

Data mining has long been applied in information extraction for a wide range of applications such as customer relationship management in marketing. In the retailing industry, this technique is used ...to extract the consumers buying behaviour when customers frequently purchase similar products together; in warehousing, it is also beneficial to store these correlated products nearby so as to reduce the order picking operating time and cost. In this paper, we present a data mining-based algorithm for storage location assignment of piece picking items in a randomised picker-to-parts warehouse by extracting and analysing the association relationships between different products in customer orders. The algorithm aims at minimising the total travel distances for both put-away and order picking operations. Extensive computational experiments based on synthetic data that simulates the operations of a computer and networking products spare parts warehouse in Hong Kong have been conducted to test the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed algorithm. Results show that our proposed algorithm is more efficient than the closest open location and purely dedicated storage allocation systems in minimising the total travel distances. The proposed storage allocation algorithm is further evaluated with experiments simulating larger scale warehouse operations. Similar results on the performance comparison among the three storage approaches are observed. It supports the proposed storage allocation algorithm and is applicable to improve the warehousing operation efficiency if items have strong association among each other.
Mao, Y. and Zheng, L., 2019. Design and implementation of port bulk storage management system based on Internet of Things technology. In: Li, L.; Wan, X., and Huang, X. (eds.), Recent Developments in ...Practices and Research on Coastal Regions: Transportation, Environment and Economy. Journal of Coastal Research, Special Issue No. 98, pp. 62–66. Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208. This paper builds the overall architecture of the warehouse material management system based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, and deploys the radiofrequency identification (RFID) data acquisition system that acts as the IoT perception layer. Furthermore, RFID middleware is structured. By analyzing the current status and management content of warehouse management, the design scheme of the IoT technology warehouse management system is proposed, and the hardware circuit design of the IoT is carried out, which provides ideas for the application of the IoT technology in the warehouse management system of bulk cargo terminals.
Light fidelity (LiFi) uses light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high-speed wireless communications. Since an LED lamp covers a small area, a LiFi system with multiple access points (APs) can offer a ...significantly high spatial throughput. However, the spatial distribution of data rates achieved by LiFi fluctuates because users experience inter-cell interference from neighboring LiFi APs. In order to guarantee a quality of service (QoS) for all users in the network, an RF network is considered as an additional wireless networking layer. This hybrid LiFi/RF network enables users with low levels of optical signals to achieve the desired QoS by migrating to the RF network. With regard to moving users, the hybrid LiFi/RF system dynamically allocates either a LiFi AP or an RF AP to users based on their channel state information. In this paper, a dynamic load balancing scheme is proposed, which considers the handover overhead in order to improve the overall system throughput. Joint optimization algorithm (JOA) and separate optimization algorithm (SOA), which jointly and separately optimize the AP assignment and resource allocation, respectively, are proposed. Simulation results show that SOA can offer a better performance/complexity tradeoff than JOA for system load balancing.
