In Amami-Oshima there are many forest resources and vegetation cover was mostly laurel trees like Castanopsis sieboldii. We investigated traditional wooden folk houses in Amami-Oshima. This report is ...mainly presented the wooden construction system called “Hikimun”. We researched seven traditional wooden folk houses at Sumiyou villages and Yamato villages there are the mountain area and at Kasari villages there are the plain area in Amami-Oshima. Castanopsis sieboldii was used as many parts except the main construction. As inter pillars and Hikimun, Schima wallichii were used. And about after 1945, Castanopsis sieboldii was used as a roofing called Hiraki.

The relationship between the mechanical properties of Cunninghamia lanceolata (Chinese fir) wood and the development of fungal decay was investigated with the aim of implementing a statistical model ...useful as a non-destructive and a fast method for determining the state of conservation of in-service timber structures. Artificial decay due to brown rot fungi was induced on wood specimens and physical and mechanical test were performed periodically, as well as anatomical observation of wood, FT-IR spectroscopic and XRD diffraction analysis. As a result, Chinese fir was confirmed to have a good durability against fungi, showing a mass loss percentage of 7.21% on average after 14 weeks of exposure. On the contrary, the mechanical properties reduced dramatically during the decay test: a 19% decrease was observed for compression strength and 21% for tensile strength. The mechanism of decay was explored and the corresponding damage constitutive model was proposed.
Recently there has been an increase in people's interest in friendly-environment wooden-structure buildings due to changes in the diversified housing environment. Resulting from such increased ...interest . there is also growth in the amount of consumed and imported woods required for various designs of wooden buildings. However, due to lack of experience in designing such buildings, many problems have arisen, including excessive dependence on traditional wooden architectures. This study conssiders the construction method of inserting a CFRP Bar into the wooden surface. From a comparison of maximum internal force, the experimental specimen group reinforcing the lateral side and the bottom side of wood showed an increased maximum internal force over 50% more than the non-reinforced specimen group, so it is known that if the load reduction rate, ΔP

is increased, the transformation rate of CFRP Bar is increased. From this result, it is also known that the CFRP Bar properly distributes the external force being exercised from outside, and this proposed construction method is effective.
This paper intends to clarify the constructive differences of the wooden western-style architectures in case of the pump room, office, and warehouse at the Goten Water Filtration Plant in Takamatsu ...City. The pump room was the symbolic facility of modernization. Therefore, that was built by using the most advanced methods of construction of the three: the double Warren truss and the new framing systems. The office and warehouse were built by using the similar western-style design in appearances. However, that construction were almost based on the traditional techniques, modules, and spaces.

Damping elastomers are often used in lightweight wooden constructions and are believed to have good sound insulating effects. In the present study the influence on the structural behaviour by using elastomer damping material (Sylomer®) in the joints, with particular respect to footsteps and floor vibrations, has been investigated. A full scale wooden mock-up was assembled with two different joint configurations and studied under free–free boundary conditions. In the first configuration, the joints between the floor and underlying walls were screwed together. In the second configuration the floor was floating on top of ribs of elastomer damping material, equivalent to normal building practice when this material is used. Both configurations were analysed and evaluated using experimental modal analysis, in the frequency interval 10–115Hz.
The relative (viscous) damping ratios of the modes were found to be on average 1.2% for the screwed configuration and 2.1% for the configuration with elastomer damping material in the joints. The damping was found to vary significantly between modes in the elastomer case. It was found that at low frequencies damping was high for modes with large motion on the edge where the elastomer material was. At higher frequencies (above approx. 40Hz), however, the damping for this configuration decreased. This is believed to be caused by a vibration isolation effect of the elastomer, decoupling the floor from the walls at higher frequencies.
To assess the differences in vibration levels between the two configurations, mean acceleration levels of well spread points on the different building parts where computed and evaluated. It was found that above approximately 70Hz, the mean vibration level in the elastomer configuration was significantly lower than for the screwed configuration. Below 70Hz, however, for many frequencies the mean vibration level for the elastomer configuration was significantly higher than for the screwed configuration (as should be expected in vibration isolation). Problems with springiness and footsteps are due to loads in the frequency range of 10–50Hz, this could indicate that elastomers, used as in the present study, could worsen these types of problems, although improving higher frequency acoustic performance.
