Abstract
Gardens have always meant a lot to people. Gardens are as much about nature as they are about culture. The extent to which gardens carry and embody both similar and different layers of ...meaning will be demonstrated by comparing two classical gardens, the Taj Mahal tomb garden of the Mughal rulers in Agra, India, and the Ryoan-ji dry landscape garden of the Zen monks in Kyoto, Japan. Parallels will be drawn by offering a (diachronic) analysis of the historical accumulation of layers of meaning associated with each one of these two gardens, and (synchronic) structural comparisons will be drawn by raising two thematic issues in particular, the inside-outside relationship and the nature-culture relationship. The roles that Islam and Zen Buddhism play in the religious meaning making of these two classical gardens turn out to be strikingly similar, in that they confirm rather than transform other layers of cultural meaning.

It is impossible to separate the semiological from the mytho- logical, the poetic from the historical, the aesthetic from the ideo- logical. Since, as the phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty ...insisted, any entity can be taken as an emblem of Being, one must be attentive to the symbolic power and semiotic valences of every word, object, and image. This article is an attempt to sketch out the role of the rock in Zen-inspired Japanese gardens and, consequently, to offer a new inter- pretation of one of the most famous gardens in the world, Ryōan-ji.

This article documents a visitation to a zen garden, witnessed by the author and her husband, who until this time had thought of the garden as all their own. It links the visit with biology, ...behavior, wonder, and depth psychology.
Carol Snow's award-winning poetry has been admired and celebrated as "work of difficult beauty" (Robert Hass), "ever restless, ever re-framing the frame of reference" (Boston Review), teaching us ..."how brutally self-transforming a verbal action can be when undertaken in good faith" (Jorie Graham). In this, her third volume, Snow continues to mine the language to its most mysterious depths and to explore the possibilities its meanings and mechanics hold for definition, transformation, and emotional truth. These poems place us before, and in, language--as we stand before, and in, the world.The Seventy Prepositionscomprises three suites of poems. The first, "Vocabulary Sentences," reflects on words and reality by taking as a formal motif the sort of sentences used to test vocabulary skills in elementary school. The poems of the second suite, "Vantage," gather loosely around questions of perspective and perception. The closing suite finds its inspiration in the Japanese dry-landscape gardens known askaresansui,such as the famous rock garden at Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto. Here the poet approaches composition as one faces a "miniature Zen garden," choosing and positioning words rather than stones, formally, precisely, evocatively.
In this paper, the author discuss the change of garden use in Kyoto by retired Emperors and Emperors, from the late Kamakura period to the early Nanboku-cho period. The result of the main study is as ...follows. The contents of garden use can be divided four period. The first period was that time when the Gardens of Toba-dono and Kameyama-dono prospered. The second period was that the Garden of Kitayama-tei was a time which had begun to prosper. The third period was when the Garden of Kitayama-tei which prospered declined. In the fourth period, the gardens mainly had been used for the villas of court nobles until the late Kamakura period, but in the Nanboku-cho period, a style of the Zen gardens of Tenryu and Saiho Temples had begun to be utilized. There is cause of this change in the following factor. Tenryu Temple built as a Zen temple was designated as a temple exclusively for the emperor’s family, and all of the gardens of the villas went into ruin. The study results indicate that even though the time changed into the Nanboku-cho period from Kamakura period, retired Emperors and Emperors still enjoyed boating, appreciating gardens and listening to Japanese court music in the Zen gardens.
