HauptbeschreibungHow are archaeology and art related to understanding New Testament texts, for example, narratives of the Lord's Supper and other meals? An international group of archaeologists, art ...historians, and New Testament scholars investigate the function of spaces in Roman houses and temples in Pompeii, Herculaneum, Corinth, Rome, Ostia, Ephesus, and Judaea. Another concern is more fully to understand the relationship between different architectural forms, Roman domus, villae, and insulae, in relation to Paul's letters and the gospels, in order to enable informed interpretation of leadership, meal customs, social relationships, and ethics in those contested spaces.
Japan, Russia, and Turkey are major examples of countries with different ethnic, religious, and cultural background that embarked on the path of modernization without having been colonized by a ...Western country. In all three cases, national consciousness has played a significant role in this context. The project of Modernity is obviously of European origin, but is it essentially European? Does modernization imply loss of a country's cultural or national identity? If so, what is the "fate" of the modernization process in these cases? The presence of the idea and reality of civil society can be considered a real marker of Modernity in this respect, because it presupposes the development of liberalism, individualism and human rights. But are these compatible with nationalism and with the idea of a national religion? These questions are the more pressing, as Japan is considered part of the Western world in many respects, and Russia and Turkey are defining their relation to the European Union in different ways. An investigation of these three countries, set off against more general reflections, sheds light on the possibilities or limitations of modernization n a non-European context.
This collection of essays offers a fresh look into Christian-Jewish cultural interactions during the Renaissance and beyond. Christian scholars, it is shown, were deeply immersed in a variety of ...Hebrew sources, while their Jewish counterparts imbibed the culture of Humanism.
We analyzed the Marangoni convection induced in the liquid crystalline material of 8CB in sandwich cells under temperature gradient. By using fluorescence photo-bleaching method, we measured the flow ...field near air interface. In the coexistence state of the smectic and the nematic phases, the direction of the observed flow was opposite from that expected from the temperature dependence of surface tension. Moreover, in the coexistence state of the nematic and isotropic phases, the flow field depended on the coating materials of the cell substrates. As for the formation of the flow field, these flow properties indicate the existence of another important physical factor in addition to the surface tension gradient.
When a steady shear flow is applied to the nematic phase of 5CB, nonlinear dielectric properties are observed. In the dielectric spectra, dielectric dispersions are recognized in the nonlinear ...dielectric constants but not in the linear one. These shear-induced nonlinear dielectric properties under the shear flow will be discussed based on the orientational change of the director under the shear and the electric fields.
It has been reported that if a shear flow is applied to the nematic phase of 8CB, some dynamical structure are induced. To clarify these structures is more detail, transient dielectric response after ...the application of the shear flow was measured. In the flow alignment region the dielectric permittivity decreased monotonously, while in the precession region a damped-oscillation of the dielectric permittivity was measured with critical increases in the oscillating frequency and damping faster when approaching to the nematic to smectic A phase transition point. These results will be discussed based on the fluctuation of smectic A structure.
A time-domain computation method based on the hybrid method is originally developed and applied to the wave-making problems of ships both in the carm water and in waves. The fluid domain is ...decomposed into the near field and the far field, and the space-fixed artificial surface like side-walls of a towing tank is employed to separate them. The Rankine panel method and the Green function method are applied to two domains respectively and the solutions in both domains are combined on the artificial surface. The former makes the present method flexible to the free-surface condition and later guarantees the radiation condition for any frequency. The use of the space-fixed artificial surface makes the theory free from the line-integral which usually appears along the intersection between the free-surface and the artificial surface when the moving artificial surface is used. The method is applied to the steady and the unsteady wave-making problems of the modified Wigley model, Series-60(CB = 0.6) and Series-60(Cb = 0.8). Through the comparison of hydrodynamic forces between computed and measured, it is confirmed that the present method is very accurate and rational for any case. 4) Beck, R. H.261 family provides very efficient coding schemes and is the most popular standard for video conferences. It is desirable to have a softwareonly codec which is implemented on a ...PC, a DSP, or a microcontroller system. In this work, we implement H.261 on winbond W89K PA-RISC processor. The goal is to achieve the best performance in terms of the frame rate with acceptable quality.
We speed up the codec from two different aspects, algorithms and programming. H.261 employs a lot of computation intensive operations, such as motion compensation, motion estimation, DCT, IDCT and color conversion. We use PHODS (parallel hierarchical one-dimension search) to perform motion estimation along X-Y directions. The DCT and quantization are combined in one procedure to reduce overhead and scaled 1-dimension DCT is used. For displaying the decompressed video, we use 256 colors with 4-2-2 bits for Y-Cb-Cr with ordered dithering. On the programming side, we flatten the code to reduce the number of procedur
