To investigate the reproductive biology of tilefish, Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps Goode and Bean, the authors sampled the commercial longline fishery from 1978 to 1982. Results suggested that ...tilefish are fractional spawners from March to November with a spawning peak from May to September. Estimates of fecundity ranged from about 195 x 10 super(3) to 10 x 10 super(6) (for 53 cm FL, 2.1 kg and 91 cm FL, 13 kg females), but only 60-85% of the ovarian eggs appeared to have been released by the end of the spawning season. Tilefish are apparently gonochoristic however, some adult males had slight amounts of ovarian tissue within the testicular mass. Sex ratios were skewed in favor of males at larger sizes; however, both sexes were present at most ages.
The medical records of all inpatients with bipolar disorder at the Connecticut Mental Health Center in 1997 were examined to compare length of stay for patients who began monotherapy with divalproex ...(27 treatment starts) and lithium (20 treatment starts). No statistically significant difference was found in length of stay (11. 5+/-6.9 and 10.3+/-5.2 days for patients on divalproex and lithium, respectively) or other length-of-stay variables. Demographic variables, diagnostic variables, and dosages of neuroleptics and benzodiazepines used adjunctively were similar as well. Dosages and blood levels for divalproex and lithium were consistent with practice guidelines. Prospective randomized studies are needed to compare the cost-effectiveness of divalproex and of lithium in the treatment of bipolar disorder.

An extended satellite image data set is used to investigate the two-dimensional structure of internal waves (IWs) that propagate along the Patagonian shelf break and continental slope in the opposite ...direction of the Malvinas Current (MC). Intense surface manifestations of IWs are found throughout the semidiurnal and fortnightly tidal cycles, propagating more than 1,000 km in the along-slope direction between 38°S and 48°S. An instantaneous 800 km view provided by the Sentinel-2A satellite multispectral imager shows a nearly continuous IW field in which inter-packet distances do not fit the usual semidiurnal tidal scales observed in coastal waters. Instead, acoustic Doppler current profiler-measured currents and CTD station data are consistent with resonant generation mechanisms in which the MC flows over bottom topography and generates upstream-propagating waves in a transcritical regime. These conditions are known to cause extra dissipation and mixing, whose effects over time and along more than 1,000 km may be important to a wider scope of ocean applications.
A family of six novel p-hydroxyacetophenone amides, 1–6, was isolated from Cystobacter ferrugineus, strain Cb G35. Their structures were elucidated by ESI-TOF mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. ...Feeding experiments with labeled 13C9,15N-tyrosine and d 10-leucine identified the biosynthetic precursors of 1.
Sidescan sonar can be an effective tool for the determination of the habitat distribution of commercially important species. This technique has the advantage of rapidly mapping large areas of the ...seafloor. Sidescan images (sonographs) may also help to identify appropriate fishing gears for different types of seafloor or areas to be avoided with certain types of gears. During the early stages of exploration, verification of sidescan sonar sonographs is critical to successful identification of important habitat types. Tilefishes (Lopholatilus and Caulolatilus ) are especially good target species because they construct large burrows in the seafloor or live around boulders, both of which are easily detectable on sonographs.

In a letter to the editor, the notion that the auto pollution problem could be solved by the wide-spread use of remote-sensing devices. This solution, however, is not enough. Other approaches to the ...problem are offered.
Three new species of hagfish (Myxinidae, Eptatretus) are described from the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. These are the first myxinids known from this region and the first species of Eptatretus with ...five, six, and eight gill pouches reported from the eastern Pacific. A key to their identification is presented.
The present paper describes the findings of stomach content analysis for 510 striped bass, most of which were prespawning adults larger than 400 mm TL collected during the spring months of 1973-75 by ...commercial gill nets in the Tappan Zee region of the Hudson River.
