  • Kopitar - Prešeren - Čop
    Toporišič, Jože
France Prešeren justly called Jernej Kopitar at his death 'the victor over them all'; that is what this learned man really was in all the domains to which he devoted his enormous spiritual ... synthetic-analytic powers. These domains were: Slovene (Slav) orthography following the principle of one sign for one phoneme, contemporary morphology of the literary language (with corrections based on historicism and morphophonemics), de-germanization in lexis, morphophonemics and syntax in so far as there was no need for germanisms, cultivation of the literary language on the basis of non-urban, i.e. living country speech. As far as the understanding of literature is concerned Prešeren, Kopitar and Čop did not disagree, nor was Kopitar, as a censor, in the service of the pre-March obscurantism
