  • Overview of multiphase CFD applications in automotive industry [Elektronski vir]

    Nowadays computer simulations are well established in many areas of vehicle development. Present paper discusses capabilities of the commercial CFD package AVL FIRE in the area of multi-phase flows. ... The focus lays in recent advances in Eulerian multi-phase modeling as well as in several applications from this field. Numerical models are outlined and illustrated through several applications. One large area considered through the Eulerian multi-fluid frame are the cavitating flows. Injector flow examples are presented here, so are other injection equipment components. Poly-dispersed cavitation model has been added lately to mimic physical processes more accurately. The modeling was carried out through two additional transport equations. Recently modeling of advanced cavitating flows has been coupled with advanced turbulence modeling as well. Featured examples utilize the k-?-f turbulence model. Further advances in the area of high pressure injector modeling have been performed through implementation of liquid compressibility.Logical question, when injection equipment is considered through simulation techniques, is how aggressive are the flows in terms of erosion due to cavitation. The effects can be followed as a result of poly-dispersed cavitation modeling, which allows for estimation of flow aggressiveness. An important area considered through the FIRE code is thermal treatment of casted parts in molding and casting industries. The process is often referred to as quenching. Several examples are shown to illustrate the capability. Other typical multiphase applications, which can be performed using FIRE code are tank-filling and piston cooling within internal combustion engines.
