    The flexural strength of reinforced concrete structures can be efficiently upgraded by means of externally bonded plates. The method is present in Slovenian practice since 1997 when it was used for ... the first time for strengthening of insufficiently reinforced newly built reinforced concrete bridge deck. Recently, the new generations of plates made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic are introduced in practice. Their advantage is higher corrosion resistance and lower weight. This paper gives information on some results of comparative testing of flexural structural elements strengthened by steel and carbon fibre plates. According to the results carbon fibre plates can substitute the steel plates. However, in the design of strengthening of reinforced concrete structures the specific characteristics of each type of strengthening should be taken into account as it is explained in this paper.
