    Otorepec, Peter
The quality of potable water can influence drinking habits and health state of the population. Apart from chlorine, chlorinated water contains also side products of chlorination. Such water has an ... unpleasant odour and taste. The inhabitants of the town of Koper are provided with chlorinated potable water and the inhabitants of the capital of Ljubljana with non-chlorinated water. Drinking habits were studied in employed people on the Institute of public health of the R Slovenia in Ljubljana and on the Institute for health protection in Koper. It was established that the daily average volume of consumed potable water in Ljubljana amounts to 0,4 l, in Koper to 0,2 l and of mineral water to 0,1 in Ljubljana and to 0,3 in Koper. The results of the study show that in Ljubljana 66,3 percent of the investigated people consume potable water when thirsty, while in Koper only 23 percent. The obtained data are confirmed also by the data about ascertained differences among the complaints about the quality of potable water in Ljubljana and in Koper. In Ljubljana as much as 97 percent of inquired people are satisfied with the quality of potable water, while in Koper only 2 percent. The cause for complaints is mainly taste (73 percent) and odour (9.5 percent). The consumption of chlorinated potable water is connected with a higher morbidity for carcinoma of bladder, large intestine and rectum. The analysis of carcinoma incidence on cited localizations was performed in Koper and Ljubljana. Rough measurements of incidence on 100.000 inhabitants in the community of Ljubljana-Centre are compared to the community of Koper higher for all the carcinoma localizations in men and women. Age standardized values of morbidity for carcinoma of bladder, large intestine and rectum are higher in the community of Ljubljana-Centre in men and women than in the community of Koper but the differences are not statistically significant.
