  • The future role of the global logistics operators and the national railways of the small EU member states
    Božičnik, Stanislav, 1951-
The paper analyses the main characteristics of the existing rail freight market and gives the basic idea of the principles of the new possible paradigm of the rail freight system which would enable ... the railways to enter also into the more perspective freight transport market niches. The common argument is stressed that the state monopolies in the railway sector have blocked competition and are a major cause for the decline of railway freight sector. The ongoing process in the EU (The so-called Second Railway Package) of opening the market access to new actors is supposed to create the necessary competition to improve the railway service and to give it a new competitive edge. The expected three step developing process of the internationalisation of the European rail freight market is presented. The "ex national" railway freight providers are expected to become partners of theintegrated logistics services offered by the big trans national logistics providers of the EU.
