  • Slovenske naselbine v Združenih državah Amerike
    Klemenčič, Matjaž, 1955-
The majority of Slovene immigrants in the USA settled in the areas where they live even today. Over two decades of research, the author has developed a map of Slovene settlements that he uses as the ... basis for discussing geographic distribution of Slovene immigrants in the USA. The paper also discusses the 1910 and 1920 U.S. Censuses and their data. In 1910, based on mother tongue, there were 180,000 Slovene immigrants and their children in the United States; in 1920 according to the U.S. census, there were 228,000. Organizations of Slovene immigrants in the USA were important in maintaining ethnic connections, and their records are useful for genealogical research. The organizations discussed in detail are fraternal benefit societies, Slovene national homes and Slovene ethnic parishes. Slowenes were over-represented in the political life of the United States; and we will discuss election results on municipal, county, state and national levels. The author shall discuss the following: geographic distribution of Slovene settlement in the United States; size of Slovene settlements in the United States; organizations: ethnic parishes; fraternal organizations; Slovene national homes; using U.S. Censuses of 1910 and 1920 in genealogical research, the case of Slovenes of Leadville, Colorado; and political participation of Slovenes in the United States
