    The intended aim of the work is to investigate into both static and cyclic mechanical properties and structures of steels used to build pipelines, after the many-years' operational use thereof. The ... scope of work comprises also: trade-off studies of lives of model components cut out from real objects; description of how fatigue cracks nucleate, grow and propagate within the native material and the welded joints; recognition of the nature cracking of model components with semi-elliptic notches which represent defects in the native material or the weld, with account taken of stress concentrations where a crack has been initiated; analytical study of fracture-surface's microstructure and correlation between characteristics of the structure there of and the service load spectrum. In the course of the study a probabilistic model of fatigue crack propagation has been formulated to provide probability density distributions of crack lengths and areas.
