  • The cities and sustainable regional development : the case of Maribor
    Nekrep, Andreja
Strengthening economic vitality and competitiveness, social cohesion and environmental protection need to be viewed as complementary, mutually reinforcing goals which constitute the sustainable ... triangle of urban development. Globalisation and international market have increased the economic importance of cities and metropolitan areas. Cities are the driving forces of economic growth and centres of innovations also spreading positive development effects across their hinterlands. Particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are major driving forces in job creation. Cities in Europe and other parts of the world are constantly competing to attract investment and business, but it is increasingly becoming evident that quality of life is amajor attraction too. Therefore, the purpose of empirical research was twofold: to 'measure' business climate as detected by enterprises located in the city of Maribor and to assess the attractiveness of the city for living.
