  • Optimizing the feasibility of underground gas-storage caverns

    This paper presents a new concept for optimizing the feasibility of underground storage of gas (USG) on the principle of Lined Rock Cavern (LRC). The principal idea behind the LRC gas-storage concept ... is to rely on a rock mass to serve as a pressure vessel containing stored and natural gas. It involves excavation of relatively large, vertically cylindrical caverns. An approach to optimization of USG with LRC is then presented. For this purpose, it was necessary to carry out a number of steps. First was the determination of the geological model of USG region. Next was transferring the geological model into the geomechanical model which could be achieved by applying the system of Hoek and Brown based on the GSI. The equivalent Mohr-Coulomb strength parameters were determined. Geomechanical analysis for risk during construction and later during operation of USG using Finite Element Method (FEM) is carried out. FEM analyses consist of calculations using different data (variables) such as: mechanical properties of the soil and the LRC, the depth and spaces between the LRC, geometry and dimensions of LRC, gas pressure, etc. From FEM analysis the terms of the possible security risks are expressed as a function of variables. A Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) optimizing cavern is carried out. The approach is illustrated in the case of USG Senovo, which is in the planning stage. The volume of gas to store is constant, when the pressure varies the volume of the caverns varies and will affect all the other parameters (diameter, height ...). The FIS allows optimizing, for a given limit of deformation, the most suitable solution depending on the site and on the financial possibilities available. Several rules were built and fired for all the intervening parameters and the final result is obtained after defuzzification. It permits to judge if the chosen system of Caverns is suitable for use and if the price is important or not.
