The notions and stereotypes of neighbouring countries [Elektronski vir] : research among the Slovenian studentsKolnik, KarmenHuman spatial identification or appurtenance to a certain space is greatly influenced by the relation of society as a whole, which co-forms individual's spatial notion also through stereotypes, ... viewpoints and values. School, as an educational institution, has a very important role in it and especially citizenship education is the subject area, which can contribute to reduction and abolition of some stereotypes bound to ideas of space, national identity, multiculturalism and similar. The article presents the results of the research about the perceptions, notions and opinions of the Slovenian youth (University students) about their neighbouring countries. In December 2005, we conducted a repeated survey in year 2000 - we asked randomly chosen students exactly the same questions that had been administered to their colleagues five years earlier. By comparing their answers we wanted to determine if our joining to EU in 2004 made any alterations in the perceptions and opinions of the Slovenian youth about neighbouring nations. Furthermore, we wanted to find out if the Slovenian students possess stereotype reflections about neighbouring countries. The research hypothesis were based on finding the influence of socio-political circumstances in the last ten years in Slovenia in relation to neighbouring countries and nations from the viewpoint of auto-stereotypical comparisons with neighbouring nations. It is not enough to indicate the citizenship education only with contents: for instance nationality rights or define spatial processes, for instance: globalisation and than form a study goals' catalogue. The predomination of such school work can lead it to a barely measurable, exactly defined study material, which is easily tested and does not consider different interests, needs and abilities of the pupils nor the actuality of time and space. Consequences of learning by heart are visible in a relative bad and even stereotype knowledge of neighbouring countries.
