  • Dyeing of wool yarn by colorants extracted from common walnut leaves and colour measurement
    Ojstršek, Alenka ; Fakin, Darinka
The main contribution of the presented work was to study the possibility of using natural colorants obtained by aqueous extraction of fresh leaves of common walnut tree (Junglans regia) for dyeing of ... wool yarn, which would be later used for unique knitted and embroidered products with high-added value. Two dyeing procedures, standard dyeing and meta-mordanting, were carried-out using different initial concentrations of extracted colorant, as well as the type and the amounts of mordants during metamordanting procedure. The obtained results of colour measurement confirmed that when the type of mordant was varied during meta-mordanting, the wide spectre of colour hues could be obtained, i.e. from light brown over greenish- brown to dull olive. Generally, the employment of CuSO4 mordant gives greener hues and FeSO4 bluer and less red hues compared to original (un-mordanted) samples. Metallic salts also enhance the colour strength and fastness properties of dyed samples to washing and artificial light.
