  • Zakaj mladi v Sloveniji odlašajo s preselitvijo od staršev? [Elektronski vir] = Why do young people in Slovenia delay moving away from their parents?

    In most European countries young people increasingly delay leaving their parents' homes. This is especially the case in Slovenia which ranks among top European countries regarding the share of young ... adults living with their parent(s). Among many possible reasons for this situation, researchers most frequently mention structural factors, such as increased participation in (tertiary) education and unfavourable conditions on the labour market, as well as psychological factors, such as increasing apathy and lack of psychological independence among young people. According to the analysis of the Youth 2010 survey data and some other sources, most of these factors don't play a significant role. Young people between 25 and 29 years, who had finished or were involved in tertiary education, were even a bit more likely to live away from their parents. Moreover, young people living with parents donot differ significantly with regard to different indicators of hedonism, attachment to parents, narcissism, pessimism or apathy. On the other hand, the likelihood of living with their parents increases substantially for young people whose parents live in a house and for those who do not have a regular employment with a relatively high salary. These findings lead to the conclusion that young people increasingly delay leaving their parents' households mostly due to the unfavourable conditions on the labour market, combined with a very common possibility for young people in Slovenia to assure relatively acceptable living conditions within their parents' households. Some further analyses suggested that traits commonly associated with the generation Y act as an additional factor stimulating young people to delay leaving their parents' household.
