  • Pain in vain : penal abolition and the legacy of Louk Hulsman
"The first part of the volume includes an English translation of “Peines perdues”, an abolitionist intervention in the format of a conversation between Hulsman and Jacqueline Bernat de Celis first ... published in 1982. Louk Hulsman’s insights, along with those stemming from other major abolitionist treatises of the period, inspired global conversations on the need to abolish prisons and punishment on the heels of “partial abolitions” that significantly reduced the number of prisoners in places like Norway during the 1960s and 1970s. This is reflected in both the emergence of the International Conference on Prison Abolition (ICOPA) in 1983, and its renaming as the International Conference on Penal Abolition at the conclusion of the meeting that Louk helped organize in Amsterdam in 1985. The second part of the volume is comprised of eight essays discussing the relevance of abolitionism in different contexts and also an appreciation of Hulsman’s ideas and work. In its totality the volume presents an extremely useful overview of key abolitionist ideas and provides pertinent insights on their origins, scope and relevance."--
