  • “Truck train” as a service for more competitive rail freight [Elektronski vir]

    The basic paradigm of freight transportstion by rail has remained more or less the same, aiming at transporting large quantities of goods along by increasingly longer freight trains. Since there are ... fewer or no successfully implemented rail-based technologies in practice that cover shorter distances or small volumes, we propose a new innovative transportation solution that supports current trends in logistics and the need for combined transportation services for shorter distances. The new innovative TT (Truck Train) concept takes into account the drawbacks of the existing rail freight system and recent innovations. A systematic review of the drawbacks of the existing rail system and recent innovations supports the development of the TT concept in the first phase. In contrast, the second phase identifies future trends, considering the evolution of the TT concept into a “truck-train as a service” (TTaaS) solution for a more competitive rail freight paradigm. The “Truck-Train as a service” (TTaaS) solution integrates the latest trends in rail-based doorto-door freight service. In line with customer needs, the paper identifies emerging technologies and trends in rail freight in terms of digitalization, automation, reorganization, integrated approach and knowledge transfer.
