  • New educational challenge for professional translators - EMT (European Master's in Translation)
    Kučiš, Vlasta
Multilingualism is one of the EU's principal characteristics and advantages, and it is based on the Old Continent's democratic, pluralistic, political and economic concepts. The linguistic strategy ... and policy in the EU institutions is complex. All member states have the right to communicate in their own language. Linguistic diversity and a specific translation mechanism are two of the EU's main projects, since the fundamental EU principles entitle every citizen access to documents written in the official languages of the EU. Multiculturalism and plurilingualism are the main features of the European society, but also a problem and the main motivation for the development of European Master's in Translation (EMT), which is promoting a common, interdisciplinary education for translators with curriculum structure focused on theoretical research, practical exercises, skill development and use of translation tools. The paper will analyze the knowledge and skills that a modern-day European translator needs, as defined and proposed by the EMT educational program.
