  • Identitásaink horizontjai = Horizons of our identity
    Rudaš, Jutka
Identity is an inexhaustible topic. By studying up-to-date identity, my paper makes an attempt at bringing to light the roots of modern subjectivity. Next to social atomism and criticism of ... multiculturalism, my interest is focussed on personal, collective and cultural identity, as well as religion and language. Language itself is a system of symbols which supports the development of identity. Aristotle was already aware of the fact that common language is the most inherent medium of human group formation. Nowadays we speak about cultural pluralism, which sharpens cultural consciousness just as knowledge of several languages refines language awareness. But let us not forget that by no means does culture always integrate or unify; it can also trigger off stratification and separation. One of the significant characteristics of cultures is the fact that they produce an intellectual world and style of thinking; a particular way of thinking which we consider "normal and natural", and which is valid only in our culture. Our culture is defined by symbols and myths. In the interpretation of Jan Assmann collective identity is nothing else but consciousness of social belonging, whereas cultural identity entails conscious participation in a specific culture.
