  • The economics of rising suicide rates in the United States [Elektronski vir]
    Rutar, Minea
Along with increasing life expectancy and improved living conditions, high-income countries have long been characterized by declining suicide rates. The United States, however, seems to be an ... exception by being one of the few developed high-income countries that have witnessed marked increases in suicide rates in the past three decades. With youth and the middle-aged being primarily affected, the elderly are the only age group that seems to have avoided this worsening trend. In an attempt to explain this phenomenon, we present and critically asses the theoretical framework that has gained the most attention from the scientific community in the past years and that understands the rising suicide rates of the American middle-aged as a result of a complex interplay of economic factors, unique to the current American economic system. We then shortly explore the main methodological objections to this explanation and conclude.
