  • Morphological and microstructural features of discontinuously reinforced PM Al/SiC composites
Šuštaršič, Borivoj ; Kevorkijan, Varužan ; Kosec, L.
Discontinuously reinforced Al/SiC composites, reinforced with different amounts and morphologies of SiC were prepared by two different powder metallurgy consolidation routes, i.e. by hot pressing of ... loosed powder mixtures and by the hot extrusion of cold isostatically pressed samples. As the metal matrix, different Al-alloy powders were used. Initial mixtures of Al powder and SiC were prepared by dry blending. Full densification of CIP samples by hot extrusion was expected. However, the density measurements of prepared composites showed that full densification was not obtained for either consolidation procedure. Possible reasons for such result are analysed and discussed. The prepared PM Al/SiC MMCs were also examined with optical and scanning electron microscopy and analysed with an electron micro-probe analyzer (EMPA). Microstructural investigations showed that non-uniform distribution of reinforcement in the metal matrix is obtained. From that point of view it can be concluded that dry turbula mixing does not allow for sufficient homogenising of Al powder and fine SiC even if consolidation by hot extrusion is applied.
