  • Microstructure characterisation and some mechanical properties of UtopMo1 (W.Nr.1.2343) hot work tool steel
    Zupanič, Franc ...
The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of heat treatment on the microstructure and consequently on some mchanical properties and fracture characteristics of the UtopMo1 hot work tool ... steel from the Ironworks Ravne in Slovenia. The steel was heat treated in a vacuum furnace and quenched with compressed nitrogen to exclude the influence of the environment on its properties. It was then tempered to maximum, as well as to work hardness. The specimens tempered to work hardness were additionaly annealed at different temperatures to investigate the temper strength. All heat treated specimens were finally subjected to mechanical testing i.e. impact and hardness testing. The microstructure analyses, as well as fracture analyses, were performed by scanning electron microscopy and EDS analyses. In this work the influence of the main microstructure parameters, such as the segregation of the main alloying elements: prior- austenite grain size; size of martensite plates: size, distribution, shape and composition of carbides on the mechanical properties of this steel is discussed. It is shown that the qualitative and in some instances also quantitative microstructure analysis with a scanning electron microscope can provide us opportunity for at least a qualitative prediction of some mechanical properties of this steel.
