  • Experimental determination of fatigue crack growth parameters

    The paper describes the experimental determination of the fatigue crack growth parameters, i.e. coefficients C and m of the Paris equation. The parmeters are obtained according to the standardized ... procedure ASTM E 399-80 using three-point bending specimens made of hardened steel (20MnCr5 as to the DIN Standard). Four specimens were subjected to impulsive cyclic loading on a testing device. During the tests the lengths of propagating cracks have been recorded at certain loading intervals. The results of the experimental testing together with the analytically determined stress intersnity range [delta] K enabled explicit determination of parameters C and m. The obtained parameters are of significant practical importance since the tested material is commonly used for high quality mechanical elements in gears, shafts,wheels, etc.
