Cencič, Avrelija ; Chingwaru, Walter ; Mičović, Elizabeta
Malnutrition is the insufficient, excessive or imbalanced consumption of nutrients, all resulting in health disorders. Nutrient supplementation may be necessary to reach adequate levels in the diet ... or to make up for deficiences. The ingredients of a diet include vitamins, minerals, herbs and other botanicals and amino acids. there are laws in place to regulate the sale of dietary supplements in the European Union (administered by the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA) and the United States of America (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act [DSHEA], an administrative body under the Food and Drug Administration, FDA). In this review the effects of malnutrition (over- and undernutrition) are discussed with the focus on socially or clinically important diseases and disorders such as obesity, toxicit, nutrient deficiency and excess diseases, and the resulting metabolic and immunological complications. Malnutrition is becoming an important issue across the rich/poor divide; obesity is often linked to affluence but has been appearing recently in poor nations. The risk factors exacerbating the effects of malnutrition are also discussed in this review. The importance of a number of supplements available on the market is highlighted, including limitations associated with the supply and use of certain suplements. Generally, nutrition contributes directly to an individual's health status, hence the need for policy markers to pay special attention to diet provision and access to information.
