  • The microstructure of dispersion strengthened copper produced by internal oxidation of rapidly solidified Cu-Al-Zr alloys
Anžel, Ivan, inženir metalurgije in materialov ; Kneissl, Albert C.
The feasibility of producing effective oxide particles in copper matrix by the envelopment process of two oxide phases during internal oxidation of rapidly solidified ternary Cu-Al-Zr alloy was ... investigated. Samples of oxide despersion strengthned (ODS) copper were prepared via rapid solidification by Chill-Block Melt Spinning and internal oxidation in a CU-Al-Zr mixture. Microstrtural analysis revealed that in rapidly solidified Cu-Al-Zr alloys internal oxidation proceeds with time-shifted precipitation of the oxides Al2O3 and ZrO2 at the internal oxidation front. The Al2O3 particles precipitate first from the solid solution at the internal oxidation front and serve as seeds for heterogeneous precipitation of ZrO2 oxide. Oxidation of zirconium starts with the dissolution of Cu-Cr intermetallic particles ahead of the internal oxidation front, continues with diffusion of dissolved Zr atoms down the concentration gradient and concludes with heterogeneous precipitation on the prior formed Al2O3 oxide particles.
