  • Phase equilibria and extraction of vitamin E rich oil from Silybum marianum using dense CO2 and propane

    The possibility of using dense CO2 or propane as extraction solvents for enriching natural tocopherols from plant materials has been investigated. The solubility of ▫$\alpha$▫-tocopherol in both ... solvents was determined using a static analytic method. Phase equilibrium data were determined for complex mixture of seed oil of Silybum marianum containing ▫$\alpha$▫-tocopherol and oleic acid in supercritical CO2, and the distribution coefficients have been determined. The seed of Silybum marianum was extracted with CO2 and propane. Operating parameters were 100, 200 and 300 bar and 25, 40, 60 and 80 °C for CO2 and 60, 150 and 200 bar and 40, 60 and 80 °C for propane, respectively. The influence of process parameters on the total yield of extraction, ▫$\alpha$▫-tocopherol content and acid value of the extracts was investigated. The experimental extraction results are well described by the mathematical model based on the adsorption - desorption equilibrium of oil from solid tissue, the diffusion of oil to the surface and mass transfer through the external film into the bulk.
