  • Microstructural changes during internal carburization of Cu-Al alloy
Anžel, Ivan, inženir metalurgije in materialov ...
The stability of interface and microstructural changes in cast-annealed (CA) and in rapidly solidified (RS) Cu-Al matrix in contact with carbon at high temperatures was investigated. The results of ... experimental studies have confirmed the formation of a highly dilute interstitial solid solution of carbon and indicated two processes that occurred in the obtained Cu-Al-C solution: precipitation of graphite and internal carburization (IC). The formation of interstitial solid solution was observed in the CA- as well as inthe ▫$RS-\alpha\_Cu$▫ matrix. Precipitation of graphite, which was enabled the presence of defects in the crystall lattice of the matrix, occurred mainly in the ▫$RS-\alpha\_Cu$▫ matrix, while the IC of aluminium dissolved in copper has been found only in the ▫$RS\alpha\_Cu$▫ matrix. Precipitated particles in this matrix consist mostly of graphite core covered with aluminum carbide. The ▫$\alpha\_Cu/C$▫ interface remained unchanged and no phases or compounds (Cu or Al carbides) were identified after the longest heat treatment. The combination of RS and IC was found to be appropriate for attaining a higher volume percentage of finely dispersed, incoherent graphite particles of submicron size.
