  • Three-dimensional numerical analysis of crack propagation in gear tooth root
    Glodež, Srečko ...
The verification of the maximum stress in the tooth root of cylindrical gears is usually carried out without difficulty by one of the standard procedures (AGMA, DIN, ISO, etc.). However, the ... determination of the remaining service life of a gear with the crack in a tooh root is possible only with use of the finite element method. The first step in determining the service life of a gear with the crack is finding a functional relationship between the stress intensity factor and the crack depth. In this paper the direction of crack propagation from the tip of the initial crack is determined with use the Virtual Crack Extension Method, where the crack is extended in the direction of the maximum strain energy release rate G. To take into account the influence of the contact area, the gear has to be treated three-dimensionally. With known properties of gear material it is then possible to compute the remaining service life of the gear by numerical integration of the Paris equation. As expected, the analysis show that the contact area directly influences the speed and direction of the crack propagation and consequently the remaining service life of a gear with the crack in a tooth root.
